The Pope and the Archbishop

Rowan Williams and Benedict XVI have been discussing their differences:

The Archbishop of Canterbury and Pope Benedict XVI have publicly acknowledged that “serious obstacles” stand in the way of their Churches’ cooperating.

Well, no news since 1534, then.

In a joint declaration, they said it was a matter of urgency that talks continue on issues which divide them.

It comes amid concerns in the Roman Catholic Church over possible women bishops and gay Anglican bishops.

And they are likely to remain so. Still, look on the bright side. They are having a cosy chat about it; as opposed to persecution, torture, murder and burnings. Things are looking up.

  1. They are an anachronistic irrelevance. I look forward to the day when Prods, Popes, Muslimists and the rest look to each other with trust and tolerance. But that’s dreaming, isn’t it?

Absolutely no chance of that, is there? They’ve all got far too much invested in the status quo.

Anyway, if all these religions cease to be suspicious of – not to mention downright hostile to – each other, then there’s no point to them. It would then all come down to some sort of homogenised ‘faith’ – sort of ‘God-U-Like’, really. And if that happens who’s going to be the top dog (on earth, that is)?

  3. Not dreaming at all, Paul.

Indeed, if you feel strongly enough about your beliefs, there is nothing whatsoever to stop you from going round exhorting your listeners to “love thy neighbour” and “forgive seven times seventy” … it’s not like you don’t have a precedent.
