Sad to hear about Pete Postlethwaite. What struck me though were the comments being made on the BBC this morning. He died of cancer and they stated that he was an “unashamed smoker” during the brief discussion. It’s what they didn’t say that is interesting – what type of cancer was it? No one seems to be saying, but if it was lung cancer, wouldn’t they be saying just that when mentioning his smoking habit?

In the 1990s, according to Wikipedia, he had a bought of testicular cancer.
GAH! A ’bout’….
I remember reading somewhere that he had one removed – and I assumed that it might have been a recurrence of this. I’m not aware of smoking causing testicular cancer, are you? What was interesting was the way that the smoking was thrown in directly next to the cancer and people left to draw the obvious conclusion. Neat, eh?
Oh, yeah, you could have taken advantage of the edit facility 😉
If was there in the BBC website report, it’s gone now. Perhaps they read this blog? I have followed PP along with all the rest of the Liverpool Everyman crowd (Julie Walters, Alan Bleasdale) since the 70s, and thought he was a brilliant actor. I only ever same him once, when he was in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the RSC (Bottom, obviously). He stole the show. Very sad.
“same” = “saw”, durr.
LR, please delete post 5. I spotted a typo too late and mis-corrected it before hitting send, thus posting twice. Sorry 🙂
The comments I heard were on the live broadcast. I don’t know who it was, but she rolled smoking and cancer together without a second thought.
Duplicate deleted. As with my comment to Julia – there is an edit facility.
I remembered the edit facility as I was posting my correction… 😀
Ah, well, it doesn’t do to look infallible, after all…
