Apple Patent Stuff

Apple are vigorously pursuing Motorola (Google) through the German courts as well as their recent victory over Samsung.

I can’t say that I much like Apple. Sure, they produce nice kit and in the past I’ve used some of it. But, then, I don’t have much time for the behaviour of the other players in this dirty little game either. A sort of a pox on all their houses really. I do tend to agree with Steve Wozniak on this though:

“I don’t think the decision of California will hold. And I don’t agree with it… I wish everybody would just agree to exchange all the patents and everybody can build the best forms they want to use everybody’s technologies.”

Indeed. If these organisations could agree sensible royalties for their developments and then others can improve or diversify from them without the lawyers getting fat on the back of it, everyone wins. Well, except the lawyers, of course. And we all benefit from the technological advances. Look at it this way –  if royalties were set at a reasonable level, the likes of Samsung would be less inclined to take them anyway…

As a user of an Android Motorola phone, I have no idea which bits are supposedly “stolen” from Apple and care less, I just find it a useful device –  whether the menu bounces or glows is pretty irrelevant and I hadn’t taken any notice. And, Apple’s attempts to get the phone taken off the market, rather than set sensible royalties just ensures that I am even less likely to buy one of their products.

However, he added that if Apple posted a bond of 25m euro ($32.6m; £20.1m), it could now force the devices off shop shelves, and for an additional sum it could have them destroyed or recalled.

Given that I have fought to get mine back when it went off for repair, how would I feel if I faced a recall of my device? Yup, that will win people round as potential customers, won’t it?

Just as well I don’t live in Germany.

  1. And people used to accuse Microsoft of being bad guys! One more reason why I will never buy an Apple product. I have been given an iPad on loan, (rich sister!) but frequently end up swearing at it within minutes, due to the over sensitive touch screen.

Sent from my 6 year old NEC laptop.

  2. I bought an iPod Classic, when Apple wasn’t calling it “Classic” but cutting edge. 60g of storage, more than my Dell desktop at the time.

It came in a little box no bigger than one of Belgian chocolates, and as I handed over the 250 sovs or so for it, I thought I’d better ask a rather vital question…

This has got a charger hasn’t it?

Oh no sir, Sir just plugs it in to his laptop and bob’s your uncle…

Well I’m going to be in the middle of the Nile next week with no Laptop, so where is the friggin charger?

Sir will have to buy one seperately then. That will be £30 karrching!

See that’s what pisses me off with Apple. Not just that their basic products are eye wateringly expensive, but even essentials like a charger are considered extras. Add in all the bloody Apps they want you to keep paying for and they are a virtual one armed bandit.

I have had hands on with various models of iPads and though some of the features are very cool and slick, they don’t do anything my laptop can’t do better, so for that kind of money… fuck ’em!

I’ll be interested when the Kindle Fire finally turns up in the UK though. £160 for a reliable high graphic tablet? Tell me more.

  3. Yup
Agree with all of the above.
Tried to type on someone else’s apple tablet once (I had to -t was job information)
    Yeuuugh!
Laid flat on a desk, as I tried to type, it ROCKED – & I lost my input data 3 times, until I told the owner to take it back, & I’d dictate to him(!).

And people PAY MONEY for this shit?
And regard Apple a nioce & Microshaft as nasty?

    You what?

  4. Brother in Law tried to download Sister in Laws piccies from her iphone to his non-apple lap top the other week. Simple drag and drop you might think.

Nope. Every single pic on the phone deleted.
