Simon Kelner comments on PETA’s latest bizarre campaign.
So it was through this prism that I viewed with indifference the news that the animal rights group PETA are campaigning to have pigeon racing outlawed.
What? Okay, yes, I have long been aware that PETA are a bunch of obnoxious fruit loops who don’t even like the keeping of pets. With our tribe of cats we are on the wrong side of this nasty, extremist organisation already, but pigeon racing?
I’ve never indulged in the pastime and am unlikely to, but it always struck me as being fairly harmless – pigeons are kept in nice cosy coops and released from time to time to do what they naturally do; fly home.
PETA, though, wants it banned, because banning things is what these “charities” are all about. If there is something that someone, somewhere, does and dares to actually like doing, there will be a charity springing up from the inner depths Dante’s Inferno to call for an awareness campaign followed by a ban, sure as night follows day.
The head of the Royal Pigeon Racing Association admits that, among the 43,000 pigeon fanciers in Britain, there may be a tiny minority who mistreat their birds. “The vast majority of pigeon fanciers look after and take care of their animals – why wouldn’t they?” That’s the official view, and there is, equally, disagreement over the casualties sustained during races, with PETA’s figures being disputed.
Well, hardly surprising. What would be equally unsurprising would be to discover that PETA’s figures are, shall we say, somewhat fanciful? After all, these so-called “charities” when faced with figures that don’t fit their prejudices aren’t beyond a little massaging to make them fit – out here in the real world we call it “making them up” or more simply; lying. Frankly, unless there is cast iron evidence otherwise, I will automatically assume that a fake charity on the campaign trail is lying to me. It’s what they do. They should have awards for them, the competition would be red hot.
Me, I’m with the pigeon fanciers, because, like me, they like and provide for needs of the animals in their care, whereas PETA kill them.
I have no idea what the actual numbers might be, but it could be interesting to compare the numbers claimed killed during races to the numbers of birds in general killed by wind-turbines.
Is PETA against wind energy?

Given all they generate is hot air, like the turbines (actually, probably more than the turbines!) I doubt it…
14000 Abandoned Wind Turbines In The USA
There are many hidden truths about the world of wind turbines from the pollution and environmental damage caused in China by manufacturing bird choppers, the blight on people’s lives of noise and the flicker factor and the countless numbers of birds that are killed each year by these blots on the landscape.
The symbol of Green renewable energy, our saviour from the non existent problem of Global Warming, abandoned wind farms are starting to litter the planet as globally governments cut the subsidies taxes that consumers pay for the privilege of having a very expensive power source that does not work every day for various reasons like it’s too cold or the wind speed is too high.
The US experience with wind farms has left over 14,000 wind turbines abandoned and slowly decaying, in most instances the turbines are just left as symbols of a dying Climate Religion, nowhere have the Green Environmentalists appeared to clear up their mess or even complain about the abandoned wind farms.
The US has had wind farms since 1981:

Pigeons – don’t think I’ve eaten them. Are they nice?
They are lovely, eaten many over the years. Make sure you get a proper wood pigeon!!
Given that the birds are released to find their own way home, if they were being mistreated I think most would get lost on the way.The only thing I disagree with Pigeon racers about, is some of them want to kill Peregrines which take the occasional bird.
I don’t get it. Pigeon breaks it’s wing flying over Beeches Cloud and the owner shoots it? Is that what happens?
