So What Now?

Oily Al, having shot his one bolt is to go. Well, no surprises there. Indeed, the result of the  referendum, didn’t exactly surprise. Now we have the panicky politicians deciding Scotland’s future. Whatever they decide, expect a fuck up, because that is what politicians do. They are incompetent buffoons who feast of  the toil of others.

As someone born in England and living here, I had no say in this. Though, had I been asked, I would probably have voted to keep the union. That said, it wouldn’t have been a strong vote as it doesn’t overly bother me either way. Scotland going  its own way would have had some benefits south of the border – kicking out those nasty socialist politicians who have cheerfully voted on matters that don’t affect their own constituents would have had some satisfaction. Also watching while the Nationalists grappled with such things as currency, dwindling North Sea oil and EU membership – all of which should have been in the bag long before a referendum was announced would have been the source of free entertainment.

Perhaps the worst of it was that it showed us close up what nationalism really is. The “Yes” campaign was dogged with an unpleasant anti-English undercurrent. As if, somehow we, the English, were oppressing the Scots. Oh, please! We, the English, have our daily lives to be getting on with. We have neither the time nor inclination to be oppressing anyone. The matter of the English somehow doing down the Scots is nothing more than vivid imagination and exactly the kind of bogeyman nationalists worldwide use to justify their existence – demonising the “other” and in this case, the English are the “other”.

It was tiresome, but it did, at least remind me why I despise utterly and completely any form of nationalism. I was born in England. That makes me English, yet my ancestry is Irish, Scots and French. There may be some Saxon in there somewhere but you will have to dig deep. I am not proud of being English for I had no say in where I was born. It just is. Nothing more, nothing less. I do not hate the Scots for some of my ancestors came from that part of the world. I have never had any part in oppressing them. If the Scots are pissed-off at the nest of vipers that is Westminster, well get in the queue. It ain’t only Scotland that has suffered London-centric, metrosexual bollocks from professional politicians fucking up their lives. Nothing to do with the English, who, like the Scots have been royally shafted by this iniquitous bunch of thieving scum.

So, Oily Al lost. That was nice to see. Shame that Cameron, Miliband and Glegg couldn’t have lost as well.

Don’t despair. They’re working on it.
