Hilary Mantel has said she feels “ashamed” by the UK government’s treatment of migrants and asylum seekers and is intending to become an Irish citizen to “become a European again”.
Well bugger off, then. We won’t miss you.
“We see the ugly face of contemporary Britain in the people on the beaches abusing exhausted refugees even as they scramble to the shore. It makes one ashamed.
“And ashamed, of course, to be living in the nation that elected this government, and allows itself to be led by it.”
Despite the media’s attempts to portray these people as refugees consisting of families and children, a close examination of the images will reveal that the vast majority of these people are young, fit men of sub saharan heritage. In other words, they are not refugees, they are illegal immigrants.
This country is a signatory to the international convention on asylum. Anyone so persecuted can come into an official port of entry and claim asylum. These people are not. The first thing they do when setting foot on our soil is to break our laws. Them and the smuggling gangs that the likes of Mantel are actively encouraging with their rhetoric. This is not a refugee crisis, it is an invasion.
Mantel is typical of the ruling elite who think they are so much better than the grubby working classes who voted the wrong way back in 2016. Now, finally, she is having a last temper tantrum before leaving in a huff. Frankly, I’d rather she just left – and spared us her tiresome, snobbish whining. Ireland is welcome to her. So is the EU.
All of the above said, I do happen to agree with her on the JK Rowling issue. And if I found myself being referred to as them, their or they, I’d kick up a stink about it.
To be honest I’m ashamed of the way that our government treats illegal immigrants too. We should be telling the French, in no uncertain terms that, you let these people into your country, they are your problem not ours. One way of solving the problem would be to force the bleeding hearts to put them up.
Only difference is: what about when they are actually ours? I was told to put the Chagos Islanders up for instance.
“The 69-year-old said writing it allowed her to open up about her endometriosis.”
You can usually rely on the Grauniad for that ROFL moment.
No, not Ireland, please, not Ireland. What has Ireland ever done to deserve people like Mantel?
Remained in the EU after the UK left. Since Ireland only joined the EEC because the UK did, that’s not quite as facile an answer as it seems.
Don’t worry, there’s as much chance of her carrying out her threat as all those Hollywood celebrities fleeing the US for Canada if Trump was elected…
She’s a totally talentless writer and absolutely ghastly to look at. Bugger off quickly Mantel !

John Galt “Since Ireland only joined the EEC because the UK did”.
Sorry to be pendantic, Wiki says they joined the year before us. But anyway, I thought it was because for every punt they contributed they got 6 punt back…..
Not any more. The Irish are now less than happy about becoming a net contributor to the EU.

Not sure what Wiki you’re reading, but according to my Wiki the UK and Ireland joined the EEC together in 1973 along with Denmark.

We note that the alleged lady only intends to adopt Irish citizenship, not to move there.
One of the delights of Irish citizenship is that they retain many historic rights, not only the right to live in the UK but also to vote in the UK. So basically she ain’t going anywhere anytime soon and will still enjoy the privileges of a UK citizen, she’s just grabbing her cake and eating it – which is appears she has lots of experience doing.
While not deliberate, just an accident of birth, I two have dual Manx/Irish citizenship. Can’t say I’ve ever really exploited this “benefit of birth” (sounds like “White Privilege”, perhaps “Irish Privilege” will become a thing?)
It does (technically) allow me to work anywhere in Europe, but I did that before BRExit and COVID-19 and can’t say that going back to doing that again would be something I’d look forward to. Happy to leave the EU to the EUians.
She manages to have 2 contrary thoughts in her head at the same time: Horrible treatment of refugees by Britain coming from the EU but somehow the EU is also the land of milk and honey.
