Changes

Another bike change. Two years ago, I took a punt on the Royal Enfield Scram, which was really their parting shot for the old Himalayan model as they were planning a new, liquid cooled, version. I thought one of these low powered bikes would be an ideal training mount for trundling around behind 125s and mopeds on CBTs yet would cope with DAS if needed. I was correct and it has performed perfectly. This bike was evidence that RE had upped their game somewhat from the old Bullet models.

I also planned to do a bit of off road riding and although I didn’t get out on the trails as much as I would have liked, I did get a taste for it.

So, two years on, I decided to upgrade. Partly because this bike had been so successful, the slightly more powerful 450 model would have a little more oomph for the DAS work, but more importantly, as I’m reducing my workload, I plan to do some more serious trail work and this bike is far more suited to the rough terrain. That said, why RE have fitted road biased tyres is odd. I have to swap them out for something more aggressive.

  1. The road tyres might reflect the fact that many riders buy that type of bike for the riding position and controlability while never actually going off road.

    • Most likely. See also, the BMW GS models. These Himalayans though are very capable off road, so I need decent 50/50 tyres. I’ve sourced a nice pair of Anlas Capra Xs that will go on in a couple of weeks.
