Brown’s Ascension

So Gordo gets the leadership without a challenge:

Mr Brown was supported by so many Labour MPs his only rival could not get enough backers to trigger a contest.

A mixed blessing one suspects. It is entirely possible that he will piss off the electorate sufficiently for them to punish him and his party at the polls. Ming the Merciless and Dave Boy Cameron have managed to make a complete tits of themselves:

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell said: “As Mr Brown will not face a challenger, it is all the more important that there should be a general election now.”

“The country is surely entitled to pass judgement on whether he should become the most powerful politician in the country.”

The Conservatives have also called for a general election once Mr Blair goes.

I see… That’s what John Major did when he succeeded Margaret Thatcher was it? Oh, no, he didn’t, did he? Neither did James Callahan following Harold Wilson’s departure. When we go to the polls we elect a parliament – these two twerps should be aware of that even if some of the electors are daft enough to believe that they voted for “that nice Mr Blair”. Unless they live in Sedgefield, they didn’t.

  1. In the case of Wilson and Thatcher, though, there was actually a leadership election within the governing party. Not that that makes a case for a general election now – be nice to give Labour another kicking though.

  2. True on both counts, but how the party chooses its leader doesn’t change the core principle; that we elected a government, not a prime minister. That’s ignoring the issues around percentage of vote and such.
