Supping With the Devil

No, I’m not supping with that Devil… Rather, belatedly, I’m commenting on Lord Carey’s article in the News of the World whereby he presents what is an example of chutzpah so far unsurpassed.

I appreciate that I am a little late with this – I was too busy yesterday to comment – and frankly, what I wanted to say has been pretty much said by Jonny Wright (must add that one to my blogroll – jolly good stuff), and rather well, too. Do go and read it all.

No, I just wanted to make a couple of points; firstly, Carey in his muddled thinking seems to be suggesting that the law should not be applied equally. That if one’s behaviour so offends Christian values, then the News of the World should, indeed, be free to splash it across their front pages and you should have no legal recourse. Is it me or is there a whiff of rank hypocrisy in the air?

As Jonny points out, not everyone in this country is a Christian and therefore should not be measured by Christian values and should feel under no compunction to abide by them. Secondly, for a man who claims the high moral ground, who expresses concern about public morality, to be doing so in an article in what is, perhaps, the most immoral rag in the country is priceless.

There’s an old saying about supping with the devil. One is supposed to do so with a long spoon. I do trust that Lord Carey’s spoon is very, very long indeed.

There’s another old story that Carey may be familiar with; it involves thirty pieces of silver…

  1. Carey is a c**t! There – free speech is not dead!

However, in a less emotional vein, you may remember when the common law was “the law” in this country – or rather interpretation of the law followed precedent established under the common law – that judges, when summing-up cases where extreme moral turpitude had been evidenced, always prefaced their remarks by the phrase that “this court is not a court of morals”. Indeed! I go back to my opening remark which is even more accurate than I thought.

  2. Essentially Carey wants to force his own moral code on the rest of us. Not a particularly shocking position for a ‘holier than thou’ Bishop. But honestly, I always thought Christians were into the S&M scene. After all it is the religion of suffering. It wouldn’t surprise me if Carey enjoys a nice spanking before jotting off to go and masturbate to Deuteronomy.

Indeed so, entirely unsurprising even though it’s a constant irritant. However, given that this story was obtained via bribery, spying, lying and blackmail, one wonders whether these are now Christian moral values hitherto unknown to us? Certainly Carey doesn’t seem to object to them if used on people he deems immoral.

Yeah, thanks for that. Perhaps you could explain just how to get that image out of my head, now please… 😮

    Pffft, your loss… 😉

I guess I’ll just have to live with it. 😉

  4. Dont think for a minute that Carey represents anything Christian in his views; the “mainstream church” is as corrupt as any of the other agencies in the state employ – it is very well indicated in the bible that there would be charlatans like him.

As for Carl Richardson’s comment on Deuteronomy, I doubt judiaical law is what gets anyone off; perhaps Song of Songs though…some of that is fairly naughty…considering that Solomon had over 700 wives and 300 concubines he was the pimp daddy…

Wasn’t it ever thus? Prior to Anglicanism, the catholic church rewrote the bible and edited it according to their politics. Their treatment of heretics pretty much sums up their corrupt nature. Anglicanism appears to be following in the same fine tradition – sans the bonfires.

  6. Perhaps the Right Reverent and Right Honorable Lord Carey thinks Max Mosley should have contented himself by going to church and kneeling down on marbles while meditating on a nice picture of the martyrdom of St Sebastian or the Crucifixion of Christ.
He could then read chapter 15 of I Samuel to see how important it is to implement divinely commanded genocide thoroughly.

And on that note you should have a look at these:

Fascinating and simple look at many aspects of the abuse of Gods word. Plus Jack Chick really hates the communists…
