That Balloon Hoax

When the television was full of images of a weather balloon supposedly carrying a six year old boy, something about it didn’t smell right. When the family concerned were subsequently investigated for committing a hoax, I can’t say that I was surprised.

Today, the story takes another bizarre twist.

Robert Thomas, who claims to have been a confidante and researcher for Mr Heene, has been interviewed by police.

Mr Thomas’s lawyer, Linda Lee, claimed: “Heene believes the world is going to end in 2012. Because of that he wanted to make money quickly, become rich enough to build a bunker or something underground, where he can be safe from the sun exploding.”

Riiiight… Words fail me. The guy is clearly a crackpot. The theory about the world coming to an end is based on some Mayan myth, a myth even the Mayans don’t believe.

The local sheriff said charges he is seeking against the Heenes include conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, making a false report to authorities, and attempting to influence a public servant.

The most serious charges are felonies and carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison.

Well, if he’s right and his crackpot theories come to fruition, he won’t be serving the full six, so there’s always an upside…

  1. He’s probably not quite so much of a crackpot as he tries to make out. Pretending your client has lost it is a standard advocacy trick.
