It’s certainly essential that the Guardian are free to censor their silly website, which I believe is the context of this. He’s right that it’s an essential part of freedom – just wrong to use the word censorship.
Likewise, you are free to delete this comment, but it will not be censorship if you do.
What Ritchie is arguing for is rather different to exercising an editorial policy. He wants CiF to exclude comments that disagree – as does his. He can do as he pleases with his site; to extend his policy to other sites, such as CiF is not okay.
My criticism extends to his absurd justification for excluding opposing viewpoints – and it is the usual leftist hogwash about not offending people. If free speech means anything, it means the right to offend.
All that said, yes I do occasionally delete comments; spammers and trolls get zero tolerance here.
