The First Stage

My authorisation from the DSA has arrived, so I am now qualified to deliver CBT. I have just run the first day of a track safety course solo, so tomorrow I will be fully fledged to deliver that, too.

Then, out of the blue, I received a phone call from a prospective employer who has found my CV on one of the job sites. The job is well within my competence and it’s a good, reputable company in the rail industry, but involves a fair bit of travelling and I’ve pretty much got my heart set on the path I’m now following, so I’m ambivalent. They asked what I wanted salary wise, so I was a bit cheeky, expecting them to walk away. They called back and have asked me in for interview.

Oh, well…

For the first time in nearly two years I’m feeling a little upbeat. I almost dare not allow myself…

  1. Yes, yes, yes – go for it! Couldn’t happen to nicer, more intelligent blogger. (You could, of course, get a haircut to join the rest of us wage slaves in conformity)

    • Oh, I dunno, a haircut might be stretching it a bit. Bedsides, it’s only an interview at this stage. Your encouraging comments are much appreciated.

  2. The interview will be a day out and to be approached like this and the feeling somebody actually wants to employ you is a hell of a confidence boost rare these days.

Take it and run with it. 🙂

    • A year ago, I’d have bitten their arm off. However, my self employed work is showing signs of recovery, and I’ve set my heart on it – not to mention preferring the flexibility and freedom it gives, despite being a feast or famine existence. If I’m made an offer, I’ll accept as my finances could do with the boost. If not, I won’t be losing any sleep over it.

  3. PM me?
    Which company?

I get around London a bit, doing survey work for a firm mostly employiong “retired” ex-railwaymen (& others)

    GO FOR IT!

    • Er, I sort of already have. The job spec they sent seems a bit vague and I’ve been asking for some more detail – I’ll have to do so again when I see them.

  4. All the best, I’m in favour of being self-employed where possible but the security of a well paid job is also nice.

  5. All the best from me too.

I was “self employed” for 7 years before I saw an interesting job advert. Phoned up agency on Friday pm, got phone call Monday pm, went for interview within the hour, offered a trial day the following Friday. Started work on the Monday after. Been there two years now and I love my job. Best one of my working life.

  6. Here’s hoping that whatever path you take, your French dream is kept alive. Good luck!
