Shiny Red Deauville

I’ve just about got the Deauville set up as I wanted. Since buying it in pretty much standard condition, I’ve put on a taller screen (essential if you want to keep the wind out of your face), the fairing lowers (essential if you want dry feet) and today, having sourced a second-hand pair of large pannier lids and got them repaired and re-sprayed to match, I’ve fitted them (essential if you have students like mine who seem to have stuff they need me to carry for them).

I’m gradually replacing rusted bolts with stainless ones and will, at some point, take a buffing mop to the footrest hangers, but otherwise, I’m pretty happy. I’ll be starting some restoration on the BMW next.

  1. I’ve got a Deau, nice little bike. Yours looks in wonderful condition, like it’s just come from the showroom. How many miles on the clock? New tyres?

      • I rode one of these for three years working as a courier for a car parts firm. Nice little hack, especially when the weather was foul. You’d be surprised when you can load onto one with a top box attached. Personally I don’t get on well with tall screens, but that’s just me.

Gearbox started to pack up at 100k, jumping out of second under load – apparently they were known for it. Don’t know if you can justifiably call it a weak point though.

        • I did that job in Bristol back in the eighties. Used a 400 Super Dream. Did the job. We had Rickman fairings in those days. And, yes, did we load up that top box 😈

  2. Looks a nice clean machine LR, and very comfy as well.

I need to change my bike really (tl1000), but the only bikes I like are either out of my price range (Blackbird) or way out of my price range (1200GS). So it looks like I am stuck with the old girl for a while longer, but she has been mine for 8 years now!

  3. Consider yourself fortunate, to get one of my bikes the way I wanted it I had to change the frame, suspension and engine…….mind you it goes well now. ( and NO I am not joking )
