Nicholas Brooks is my cousin’s son. I feel for her at the moment, even though we’ve not been in contact for a long, long time – not since our Gran’s funeral twenty years ago. Brooks’ father Joe was an arsehole way back in the seventies so I guess it was no surprise Nicholas ended up completely fucked up…

We can’t choose our relatives, only our friends…
A gentle word of advice from one who has been in a similar position to you. Many people will be shunning this mother, either out of awkwardness or moral righteousness. A card or letter to her expressing some kind words to her, regardless of his actions, would be a special thing for someone in her position right now. It was his crime. But she’ll also be paying a heavy price.
what a terrible tragedy for both families. As one whose children had an asshole for a father, the kids can grow up normally despite the odds (my ex husband tried to kill us all in 2000) my 26 year old is an army medic now with 2 tours of Afghan under his belt, my daughter is in a loving long term relationship with a sweet man and has a great job, and my youngest son still lives with me and is in full time education training to work with animals!
It does not always work out for the best though.
His sister, Amanda, is fine. She has made a career as an actress and seems to be well balanced. The problem probably stems form when their parents split – Joe took custody of Nicholas and my cousin didn’t see him for fourteen years. Joe, as it turned out was far worse that we ever realised and took his own life rather than face the consequences of his actions.
