No, They Are Not

What a fucking twat.

Well, except for one small thing: most Android phones are rubbish.

I use an Android phone. It is far from rubbish. Indeed, when someone makes such a generalised sweeping statement, you know straight away they are spouting rubbish themselves. My Motorola has proved a decidedly good item. Frankly, I don’t use half of its capabilities, but those I do use, it serves its purpose very well indeed.

Samsung has made huge inroads into the market with its Galaxy devices. These are “rubbish” are they? Farhaad Manjoo seems to think so because he cannot tell the difference between carrier apps and OEM apps and is too fucking lazy and stupid to customise the gadget. Once this is done, that’s it, you get on and use it as desired.

I suspect we have an Apple fanboi spouting here.

This is one of the most important advantages Apple has over Android devices. When you buy an iPhone, it works exactly as Apple intended; it’s never adulterated by “features” that the company didn’t approve

Ah, yes, the old Apple control freakery. The reason I would never buy an Apple product. As the consumer, I want to decide what I will run on it, not the phone manufacturer. I am not interested in what Apple “approve” if I want to run it, having bought the product, I expect to be able to buy and run anything that I choose. Android allows me this freedom.

So, new year’s resolution be damned, I’m sticking with Apple.

Yup, a fanboi. I won’t be making any resolutions. When the time comes, I’ll look at what the market has to offer and buy accordingly. Except, it won’t be an Apple product.

  1. Quite so, I avoid apple for much the same reason. Very nice hardware indeed, but I can’t be doing with their control freakery.

I don’t want to have to use iTunes to get content onto and off of my device. With Android I simply plug the phone into the usb port and it is a drive I can drag files into. Simple.

I also like to have access to the file system of my phone/tablet. Apple don’t want me to though.

    • It’s that simplicity that appeals to me. I don’t have iTunes and don’t want it cluttering up my computer. Drag and drop is simple and effective and I am in control.

      • I have an android tablet as well (ASUS).

To get content on, I can plug a hard drive into its USB port and drag stuff off it, or indeed from SD or XD cards, (or USB memory stick). So not only do I not need software to do it, I don’t even need another computer.

Add to that detachable keyboard (with its own battery to add life to the battery in the table), and the HDMI output and it is a much more useful bit of kit than the iPad.

        • I’m considering a Dell XPS Ultrabook. It can be used as a Tablet with Windows 8 – so is compatible with my clients’ systems and can be used as a laptop with built in keyboard. A far more useful piece of kit than the iPad.

  2. I wonder how many Apple fanboys realise just how often their shiny toys “phone home”? I recently downloaded “Wireless Network Watcher”, one of the many excellent bits of Windows freeware from Nirsoft (and NO, I don’t have any connection other than as a grateful user). It runs directly from the exe file (no installation reqd) and shows what is accessing your network. I was surprised to see the iPad given to us by a family member frequently showing up, and then disappearing again. At first I wondered if mother was trying to use it, but that wasn’t the case. After watching for some time I now know it makes short connections roughly every 3 minutes, day and night! Some research suggests it may be an App doing it, but as “Macs can’t get viruses” there don’t appear to be any free firewalls I can install to stop this behaviour.

I began writing this reply on it earlier, but when I opened a new tab to check something out, and then went back to the previous one, it had completely forgotten everything I’d written up to that point. And don’t get me started on the bloody touchscreen.

Sent from my 7 year old NEC laptop.

  3. I would not use an Iphone if they paid me to.
My daughter has one and it’s useless, I will stick to my Sony, it does what I need it’s not too complex for an old dear like me and takes amazing photos.
    Job’s a goodun.
