A Spot of People Power

The Sheffield half marathon was cancelled due to elfinsafety and Plod was more than happy to blockade the route to stop those pesky runners going for it anyway. It didn’t work.

Inspector Neil Mutch, from South Yorkshire Police’s Organisational Planning Unit, said that after officers attempted to “convince” people not to race, in the end it was decided it was “a lesser risk” to let them through.

Having been forced to accept the inevitable. It’s a bit like that cheese rolling event in Gloucestershire. People are plenty big enough to look after themselves. Water is not an essential requirement on such an event – people can always bring their own, after all. And if they do drop down with dehydration, well, they knew the risks and chose to take them. No business of the police who should be out catching felons, not trying to stop people taking minor risks.

So, just for once, the drones stood up to Nanny and said “no”. We need to do it more often. Indeed, I recommend seven times a day should be about right…

  1. Unfortunately it appears that most of the runners didn’t run because they faced down the police and the health and safety jobsworths, but because the PA system was so bad that they didn’t know that the race had been cancelled. It would seem that a small handful must have done so in order for the race to get started though.

  2. As anyone who has seen “The Matrix” films will tell you, that’s where Elf’n’Safety is leading us…
