This phrase says it all.
There will come a time, one calmer than this, when we look back at the phenomenon that was Ukip and wonder how it was allowed to happen.
Allowed to happen? Jeebus! It was allowed to happen because we are supposed to live in a liberal democracy where people can form parties and stand for parliament having put their ideas to the electorate. Clearly, a significant proportion of the electorate have decided that Ukip has ideas they like. So Hugh Muir can take his “allowed to happen” and stick it up his fundament. It is not up to the chattering classes to allow or disallow, it is up to us to decide. That’s how democracy is supposed to work.

If we are going to use the phrase ‘allowed to happen’ then we should apply it to the way that such self serving kleptocrats have taken over the entirety of our mainstream political system. They lie and steal and treat the electorate with complete contempt and then wonder why people want to vote for somebody, anybody, but them.
