Authoritarianism is Addictive

How rapidly has a nominally libertarian PM descended into outright authoritarianism and the Conservative Party, nominally on the side of liberty has come out insanely authoritarian.

Britain’s most senior police officer today said she has ‘no interest in interrupting family Christmas dinners’ to catch coronavirus rule-breakers…

Well that’s good. I suppose even she can see how this will play out.

…as Matt Hancock suggested people will still be banned from hugging their relatives.

This, people, is what we are dealing with. A man so wrapped up in his own hubris that he thinks that he can micromanage our lives to the point where he can dictate whether we hug our relatives or not.

Her comments came as Mr Hancock poured cold water on the prospect of a major loosening of curbs over the festive period as he said he wants a UK-wide set of rules ‘if at all possible’.

You can make whatever damned rules you like. I will be ignoring them and I don’t suppose for one moment that I will be alone.

But Mr Hancock dampened those hopes as he said ‘it of course won’t be like a normal Christmas’ and ‘there will have to be rules in place’.

Go boil your head you nasty little man. Hopefully this will be the proverbial straw and people will finally tell these vile demagogues where to get off.

Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, a leading statistician at the University of Cambridge, said any easing of rules will undoubtedly come with extensive Government guidance which he suggested could include a ban on singing as he also joked: ‘Maybe they will try to make a rule against family rows at Christmas.’

Christ almighty.

  1. I was somewhat encouraged today when I had to take a 200 mile car journey from the depths of Gloucestershire to South Yorkshire. M5, M42 and M1 mostly. Nearly every overhead sign was saying something like ‘stay home and only take Essential travel’. The motorways were just as busy as this time last year. A good 2 fingered salute to the Government ! It really made my day !

      • Out of all the places where I expect and expected there to be protests against the Govt’s covid related tyranny and incompetence, Basildon would not be a place where I would have expected to see protests. If the people of Basildon are protesting then the Govt has most surely lost the support of more Britons than is being shown in various surveys? It’s not a place that one associates with protests like this and for this reason, which is why I believe that having Basildon in this list is important.

  2. They’re well past the point of ridicule and are simply being ignored now, like the nutter on the bus. Just nod and smile at his ranting and raving and go about your normal business.

The only reason that Handcock is still on the box is that somebody needs to hold the job title, be the scapegoat and get reshuffled to the back benches when all this nonsense is over.

The possibility of taking a sensibilist approach to all of this was gone the moment BoJo backed away from the Swedish approach when presented with Professor Pantsdown’s Excel spreadsheet of lies and exaggerations.

    Just ignore the buggers.

Has she been reading my comments about the NYPD? I find it encouraging that the UK police have finally woken up to the fact that dancing to the government’s tune is leading to them being ridiculed and despised.

    • Yep. Many US PDs and Sheriffs have gone on msm and said “We will not enforce these rules/laws”

Long past time UK plod did same. Dick speaks with forked tongue – MET launched their online “Report A Neighbour” site yesterday

  4. Dear Mr Longrider
