Freedom of speech and consequences, I guess.

A nurse who sparked fury by saying live on national television: ‘If you voted Conservative you don’t deserve to be resuscitated by the NHS’ today said she regretted her comments – and said: ‘I shouldn’t have opened my big mouth.

Miranda Hughes, 46, confirmed she had been sacked from her current job with a private health care provider as a result of the inflammatory comments made on live TV.

And she said she deserved to be fired for the outrageous comment that has led to her being vilified as a ‘monster.’

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline outside her £500,000 home in Odiham, Hampshire, the mother-of-one said: ’I said what I said in the heat of the moment.

‘I was very angry and should not have said what I did, but I was so angry that it just got the better of me.

Well, yeah. I’ve said often enough that people shouldn’t be sacked for what they say online. However, this one crosses a line. She is a nurse and her comments would naturally cause concern about the healthcare she might provide if you happened to vote for the Conservatives. She just said so on national TV. How could her employer keep her on after that? While we didn’t know at the time who her employer was, exactly, she would be recognisable to anyone who watched the programme. And, given the inflammatory nature of the comments, all over the papers too. So, if you voted Tory, could you trust this woman to give you healthcare according to your needs and not your politics? That said, I wouldn’t be discussing such matters with a nurse while in hospital anyway. But that’s beside the point.

It’s no wonder she was given the elbow. Stupid woman deserved it. She does appear to have enough self awareness to realise that.

Speaking outside her home in Hampshire, Miranda said: ‘They called me and I had a discussion with them. In my own silliness I hadn’t read the staff handbook which stated you could not go on television.

Oh dear. When I worked for the railways, it was made clear that we were not to talk to the press. As an incident manager, I might find myself having to when attending an incident and they would give me a statement from which I was not allowed to deviate. Otherwise, say nothing to the press. It was good advice. Advice Ms Hughes now has time to ponder upon.

  1. What about if you voted for the Libertarians as some did?

Too many people believe the NHS is something sacred rather than to be used when you’re ill.

  2. “I hadn’t read the staff handbook.”

Doesn’t that too suggest that she’s a bit of an idiot? For most of my time at my last job we didn’t have a workplace manual, presumably everybody just winged it. Once we did get one distributed I sat down and read it and also referred back to it on occasions when there were minor disputes.

    • “Doesn’t that too suggest that she’s a bit of an idiot?”

Not really Stony, its an excuse if you ask me. She knew the comments were nasty but thought that she’d get away with them because she thought that the majority of the public were with her, but she miscalculated. Even if someone thinks it, even an idiot wouldn’t say a thing like that in public. If anything the staff handbook was used as a reason to get rid of her before she stirred up a shitstorm against them.

  3. What she said was very poor and she suffered the consequences – yet the Jeremy Vine show seems to based on provoking people to say outlandish, emotionally driven, things. Things that people believe to be true deep down.

There are a number of ‘presenters’ that deliberately provoke. I watch/listen to none of them.

    • I avoid Jeremy Vile like the plague. What I don’t get is the visceral hatred of someone who voted Tory. I don’t like the tories. I don’t like Labour, but I don’t hate people who voted for them.

      • Most people don’t realise that this is a well known facist tactic dating back to the rise of Hitler in 1933. For example, the Nazi Azov and Right Sektor batallions in Ukraine at a rally – “We want you all to jump up and down to show your loyalty, if you stop jumping you’re a filthy Russian”. That’s on video if you feel inclined to look for it.

Is the same as, “If you refuse to get the jab you can’t work or buy things”

And “If you refuse the jab, you can’t use the NHS”.

It starts with demonizing a certain demographic and stirring up hate toward them like this fucked up bitch. She deserves whatever she gets.

  4. The implication seems to be that it is the Conservatives’ fault that the NHS is a shitshow. If they were actually Conservatives, there would be at least a possibility that it wouldn’t be. Can you imagine the screeching that we would hear from the left if the government actually started taking the necessary steps to sort it out?

  5. Happy to nurse for private healthcare. So how does that work thought it was only Tories supported private health.

  6. This is why free speech is such a great thing. It allows the idiots to identify themselves clearly so that we can avoid them.

Did she deserve to lose her job over it though? Probably, such comments coming from a healthcare provider would make her remaining in position somewhat untenable.

  7. having once been patronised by the BBC many years ago and seeing how the press don’t give a damn about who they inerview, I wouldn’t say a word to any journalist.

    • Yup. I’d agree. Never speak to them unless you are making your own recording. They will use deceit to make you look a fool, although in this case, they didn’t need to. But again, all it takes is an unguarded moment while in the heat of a discussion. Saying it down the pub is one thing, but saying it on national television, well, that’s bound to end in tears.

      • There were a number of work bloggers who talked to the mainstream press in times past. They all got ‘outed’ (Doxxed) and misrepresented.

A wise choice on your part. Mainstream journalists are not to be trusted about anything.

  8. That you hire people who don’t bother to read the conditions of employment and other people whose job is to ensure that people do so (managers & HR staff) yet clearly fail to do it, tells you a lot about how the NHS is run…
