The Final Bell?

Three years ago, we were told that Steve Bell hade been fired from the Groan. Apparently not. However, now we are told it’s finally happening.

Artist Steve Bell says he has been sacked by The Guardian over claims that a new cartoon linked to Israel was ‘anti-Semitic’.

The cartoonist, who has worked for the Left-wing newspaper for more than 40 years, claims he has been told it is no longer willing to publish his work after he submitted a controversial image of Benjamin Netanyahu.

It’s what got him into trouble the last time. His dawdles are antisemitic, no matter how much he protests. That he lacks any artistic talent or merit is another matter. Frankly, good riddance to bad rubbish. If you want to see how political cartoons should be done, the ever talented and funny Matt is the one to look out for. Bell just posts nasty, bitter garbage that doesn’t come anywhere near to tickling the funny bone.

The Groan finally decided that enough was enough and have decided not to renew his contract. I know, I know, this is a form of cancellation, but the employer does have the right to decide whether to employ someone, so the two things clash.

Steve Bell’s awful, childish scrawls have never been funny and have always been designed to be as offensive as possible. Nothing new here. I’m just surprised that the Guardian didn’t leap to his defence, given that he shares their politics. Should he be sacked? Is it a free speech issue? He was drawing to publish in their publication. They are free to decline to do so, although they published worse examples than this one.

  1. I don’t disagree with the above but The Guardian has only done this because it fears a public backlash not because it supports Israel or anti-Semitism.

And it is not meant to be anti-Semitic per se: it is an imitation of a cartoon by David Levine of LBJ pointing to a scar in the shape of Vietnam. It even says that in the cartoon.

Indeed. However, context matters and as is usual for Bell, it is crass and obnoxious.

  2. Bell just posts nasty, bitter garbage… and fitted in well with the tone of the Grauniad.

I used to comment regularly on the Grauniad and it was an interesting place of divergent views. But after the Grauniad lost the Brexit referendum the commenters swung towards almost 100% nasty bitter views. The sort of commenters that couldn’t acknowledge any correction and would repost the same old lies later on. I decided it was no place for me and cancelled my access.

One or two web sites have become infected by too many nasty and bitter commenters. I suspect Guido Fawkes is struggling against this polarisation. I no longer support them either.

I don’t expect everyone to agree with my points of view, I have no problem with vulgarity or passion. I do find dumb repetition of extreme opinions boring.

  3. @Nathan – the whole paper is the left’s version of Der Sturmer – It hates the white indigenous population , anyone right of Karl Marx etc. It also refers to the Hamas terrorists as militants, just like the BBC.
