The unfortunate kidnapping of Margaret Hassan highlights a critical issue. The objective of these groups is not what they claim – release of prisoners, withdrawal of troops etc – it is the very coverage that the media, governments and familes of the hostages provide. The distraught hostage pleading on the world’s stage for their lives is the only objective. When will we stop giving them what they want? Hard as it may sound, Ken Bigley’s family directly contributed to the kidnapping of Margaret Hassan, because they proved that it works.
