Ann Coulter and the “Witches”

Love is patient, Love is kind, love does not envy, love does not boast, love is not puffed up, love does not behave indecently, love does not seek its own way, love is not provoked, love does no evil, love does not rejoice in unrightousness, love rejoices in truth, love covers all, love believes all, and love expects all, love endures all, loves never fails

1 Corinthians 13:4

Oh, that they who preach, would also practice. Hat tip to Libertine for pointing me to this sordid little story:

American conservatism’s queen of toxic rhetoric, Ann Coulter, has sparked nationwide fury by describing a group of September 11 widows as “witches” revelling in and profiting from their husband’s deaths.

I don’t know much about Ms Coulter, and if this outburst is anything to go by, I don’t much want to. She’s written a new book, “Godless; The Church of Liberalism.” It seems to have hit the best seller lists. In it, she attacks a group of widows whose husbands died in the twin towers attacks in 2001. They appear to have committed the cardinal (and presumably godless) sin of criticising president Bush and his handling of the matter.

She described a group of four prominent September 11 widows known as “the Jersey Girls” of acting as though “the terrorist attacks happened only to them”. She added: “I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.”

So ad hominems all round, then? From the little I’ve gleaned, rational argument isn’t Ms Coulter’s style, preferring to launch nasty personal attacks rather than engage in rational discussion of the issues.

Miss Coulter, a regular contributor to the conservative Fox News channel owned by Rupert Murdoch,

Ah, Faux News, that explains much. It also explains much that a nasty vitriolic attack such as this reaches the best seller lists. I don’t do Christianity, but I do try to abide by some of its central tenets. It’s a shame that in her willingness to vilify those with whom she disagrees, Ms Coulter ignores the teachings of her prophet.

And now faith, hope and love remain, these three. But the greatest is love.

Perhaps Ms Coulter might like to take note…

  1. Longrider,

AC is a cult figure in the USA. She was fired by the ‘National Review’ for writing of Arab nations on September 12 2001 that ‘we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity’, written after a close friend of hers, a lady named Barbara Olson , was killed in the place that hit the Pentagon.

However, AC has peddled her notoriety into becoming literaly a caricature of an opinion journalist; believe it or not, an Ann Coulter doll was available at one time, don’t know if it is now –

Even the most diehard ra-ra neoconservatives, the ones who started their philosophical journeys as neo-Trotskyites, think she’s OTT. But she puts on a good show on TV, and there’s clearly a market for her work in some quarters. Whether or not her ideas conform to the founding principles of the Great Republic is another matter altogether.

  2. There are Bible quotes that say one thing and ones that say the exact opposite, she’s picking the ones which best suit her agenda but then don’t they all?
