I’ve treated myself to a digital SLR. I’ve been meaning to ever since DSLRs finally dropped below the £1,000 for a body only. I’ve opted for the Olympus E510 with two lenses, a wide angle to short telephoto zoom and a medium to telephoto zoom. This being a four thirds camera (which for those with long memories is the modern version of a half-frame camera), the 14 – 42 equates to 28 – 80 if it was a 35mm camera and the 40 – 150 is the 35mm equivalent of 80 – 300. It’s a good starting point. I will be adding a macro lens to the kit as soon as funds permit. I’ll also do a review once I’ve found my way around the camera. In the meantime, early impressions are positive. Not bad for under £500 all in.

That is very good.
Thankyou. I’d just charged the battery up and was wandering around the garden looking for subject matter to experiment on. This is an epiphylum and produces these wonderful scarlet blooms every year.
Mark,
I went out and bought myself this today:-

It’s not in your league of camera but it’s a fair cut above what I’d normally go for and it’s brought the joy back into photography for me and that’s a good thing.

Jonathans last blog post..Mohan Veena….
Canon have always produced nice cameras. Their digital SLRs are cracking pieces of kit, but I prefer the more compact Olympus for handling. Good luck with it.
Hopefully, I can get an even better camera down the line but for now this will do. It’s fired up the passion for photography that developed (ho ho ho) when living in Australia. Any tips or advice on photo-taking? The image of the rose from this post is exceptional. I can almost feel and smell it.
You could do worse than starting here. There are articles that you may find interesting.
Oh, and it’s an epiphylum – a type of cactus. Nicknamed by my sister as the cactus from hell. Something to do with all those spines…
