Mawkish Displays of Grief

JuliaM comments on the sickening display of sentimentality in Liverpool two decades after Hillsborough. Well, yes, but last year Manchester United out did them by wallowing in indulgent self-pity over an air crash half a century ago.

There is something deeply sanctimonious about the world of football. Something quasi-religious; such is the seriousness with which it regards itself. I guess that it is necessary. After all, the mind-numbingly tedious game it is centred upon is the ultimate cure for insomnia.
