Never in the Field of Human Nonsense

Has so much been uttered that is so vapid as that uttered by Ken Livingstone.

In comments, reported in the latest issue of the magazine, the former London Labour mayor said next year’s mayoral race was “a simple choice between good and evil – I don’t think it’s been so clear since the great struggle between Churchill and Hitler.”

Giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming that he is being somewhat facetious, Ken has made something of an error here. Boris is the Churchillian side of this equation…

Okay, bit of a stretch, I know, but less of one than seeing Ken as Churchill.

Ken then goes on to invoke the Archangel Gabriel –  so, yes, I think he is taking the piss. Still, that doesn’t stop some folk getting all offended.

However, Mr Barwell, MP for Croydon Central, said: “After the events of the last week, Londoners need a mayor who will unite our city, not one who regards people who don’t share his views, as evil.”

“To joke that Londoners who don’t vote for him will ‘burn forever’ after everything we have been through in the past two weeks is crass even by Ken Livingstone’s standards.”

Yes, crass, but not worth getting one’s knickers in a knot over. Smile, nod and move on. I doubt Boris will be losing any sleep over it.

  1. My first thought was, OK, so Ken’s an ideological, left-wing lunatic, but comparing himself to Hitler’s a bit harsh…
