Via Chris Snowdon, this.
So should the State dictate how many sausage butties I have for breakfast? Should the Health Minister be e-mailing me about my five-a-day broccoli and bananas? Yes and yes. Because my “freedom” has repercussions, not just on my health but on the rest of us. Private lifestyle choices have a tremendous effect on the public purse.
Jeebus! Look, you may want the nanny state to dictate your every mouthful. The rest of us are capable of making reasoned assessments about the risks we take. And some of us decide that the pleasures of today are worth a possible curtailment of life at some undetermined later point. Besides, it is none of the state’s business what we eat and as for the public purse, we are robbed blind to pay for it, so you can stick that one where the sun don’t shine, frankly.
Some will argue that this is an affront to personal freedom.
It is, and that is all that needs to be said on the matter. Bad enough that we have politicians seeking to interfere in our daily lives. But we get useful idiots like Jonathan Waxman cheering them on.
I’ll eat what I choose and take the risk. That is freedom of choice in action.
“Government intervention on smoking has worked.”
Well, I stopped reading there. In what way has it ‘worked’?
Oh, ok I admit, I read on a little more, to the point where Mark Twain was apparently making medical diagnoses. Then I stopped.
I detect nanny is playing her hand wide open and quite possibly on purpose to destroy itself. The end is near its no apparent in this failed attempt at world socialism as the world spirals into a depression. All governments and businesses alike are going into self-survival mode in the comming depression, nanny has to go!

She serves no useful purpose
She has no revenue generating qualities
She sucks taxdollars like vampire does blood
She costs the taxman billions in revenue
She has created prohibition and a blackmarket to boot
She has cost the closures of 1000s of revenue generating businesses
She has destroyed the livelihoods of unknown tens of thosands in lost wages and careers.
She has added to the general unemployment
She has created a fear that doesnt exist
Everybody is a loser when nanny is around
Say goodbye to nanny, weve grown up!
That scratching sound you heard was the bottom of the barrel being scraped 😉
The Times article has retreated back behind the paywall. I don’t know how we were able to access it before. Still, I made the most of it while I could 😈
… and when they make it a criminal offence to take the risk, I suspect you will continue to do it. I know I will.
I’m not sure ‘arsehole’ is the right word, after all, at least normally-constructed human beings only have one (singular).
Sadly for us, there’s a lot of these people:
“Any suggestion that the principles behind the smoking ban be extended to junk food prompts near-apoplexy, as though we have an inalienable right to consume as much high-fat, sugary rubbish as we wish.”
We do, Joan. We really do. It’s called ‘freedom’. But you really aren’t saying anything new, are you?
Took young Saddam along to a “weaning clinic” last week.
One part of the advice given was that we should avoid weaning our young uns on anything that has reduced fat content.
I see visits to “re-education facilities” for employees coming to a health centre near me soon.
