The Sudden Obsession With the Bikini Line

Both the Beeb and the Indy have articles about pubic hair removal. If I was of the conspiracy theorist bent, I might even begin to suspect some sort of meme going on here.

Frankly, whether people remove pubic hair or not is up to them. But we are warned via “studies” that this is bad for us.

The team studied 30 new patients with a poxvirus called molluscum contagiosum who had been treated in a private clinic in France.

All very well, however, it is statistically insignificant and I am wondering why the twenty-four men involved wanted a neat bikini line. The Indy’s article tries likewise to scare the bejeesus out of us –  from a right-on feminist angle, of course.

The removal of pubic hair is not confined to man-pleasing Barbies, nor even to straight women. Nevertheless,  the fashion for it makes me uncomfortable. Hairless female genitalia have an obvious association, and that is with pre-pubescent girls. Where there are hairless genitalia, surely the unwelcome suggestion of the childish body is never far away.

Ah, yeah, paedogeddon is never very far away. Like many men, I shave my face. Does this make women who like it have a hankering for pre-pubescent boys? No, don’t be silly. But of course the whole matter is a bit silly. Some people like to shave or wax (ouch!) their pubes. That is a matter for them. They might get razor rash –  which is not such an uncommon ailment. I once had a course of antibiotics to combat it. If so, stop shaving –  or maybe use some aftershave (ouch! Ouch!).

Either way, it’s a matter for the individual. However, it seems that we can probably expect a campaign to eliminate the Brazilian, not to mention a demonization of men for forcing young women to defoliate their nether regions. Just you wait and see.

  1. Re the molluscum contagiosum; that’s got more to do with promiscuity than removal / reduction of pubic hair, which has put pubic lice (Once a pubic scourge) on the extinction list. Swings and roundabouts.

As for the ‘paedo’ snark; to the warped man haters who authored that prose abortion, all sex (Apart from their specific preference) is perversion. One can safely ignore them. They spun it as a ‘feminist’ issue but ignored the 24 male patients out of 30 cases. Meh.

  2. Someone showed me the article in The Metro paper this evening in the pub. I stopped reading at the pint shaving was described as (and I’m paraphrasing slightly) ‘causing trauma to the hair follicles’. That would give me and my chin just cause for claiming compensation for post traumatic stress. Utter guff.

  3. Women have shaved since time immemorial. They were even doing it the time of the Pharaohs. Shaving pubic hair is no different to shaving underarm hair or legs or the upper lip. It’s part of the process women do to attract mates.

In fact us humans are one of the few animals on Earth where the female works to attract the mate. Most animal species have the male doing the work, eg. Peacock. Female equality at work.

  4. TBH- I thought that any ‘suggested links’ to paedophilia are now a Hate Crime?
[On the grounds that pubic shaving is quite common amongst Moslems]
