And this would change what, exactly? Apart from the obvious that with all of that data cluttering up the system the noise to signal ratio would be impossible to manage – and, of course, the civil liberties issues, something that the weak of mind are always happy to offer up for sacrifice at the slightest risk to body and soul. But precisely how would this have changed what happened? They knew about these people and did nothing prior to the attack – possibly because they couldn’t, but that’s a risk you take if you want a liberal society where we don’t spy on everyone just in case they do something nasty.
The whole fucking point of terrorism (and it is debatable whether this atrocity even qualifies) is that it creates terror and the terrorised then do the terrorists’ dirty work for them. Every infringement of our civil liberties, every trade off of freedom in favour of security is a victory for the cowards who carry out these attacks and is a signal to them that it works, so please come back and have another try. Well, I am not terrorised and I am not prepared to trade my civil liberties for a patina of security. For fuck’s fucking fuckitty fuck’s sake, what is it with these arseholes? The response – the correct and only appropriate response – is to stick two fingers up at them and carry on as normal – much as Margaret Thatcher did when the bastards nearly killed her in Brighton. Given that there are about 1.6 millions Muslims in the UK, clearly Islam is not “incompatible with western civilisation”, for if it were, simple deductive logic would tell us that there would be rather more problems than we have. Clearly most Muslims are able to ignore the idiocies of their religion as effectively as Catholics are able to shrug off the idiocies of theirs. If they weren’t they would be liquidating unbelievers all over the shop. Anybody is free to believe whatever they choose, however utterly absurd. What they should not be entitled to do is demand that their beliefs be taken into account when the government forms policy or that people who ridicule their preposterous beliefs be prosecuted. Muslims or followers of any other religion are perfectly free to live where they choose, worship how they will, but when they start demanding parallel law systems or that we should it meat slaughtered in accordance with their wacky beliefs, the correct response should be “go to hell”.
