So Tell us Something We Don’t Know

TPS is a waste of time.

Millions of people are signed up to a system designed to stop unsolicited sales and marketing calls, but some are still receiving up to 10 calls a month, consumer group Which? says.

It said it had heard about people being called by many different companies.

Companies are legally required not to call domestic numbers registered with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS).

This is not news. Many of the calls come from abroad, so sidestep TPS anyway. Others just don’t give a damn or masquerade as research calls, thereby flying under the radar.

There is only one effective way to stop these pests with a land-line phone and that is Truecall. Yes, I realise that I am somewhat evangelical about this, but I have not received an unsolicited call since January. No, not one. Looking at my logs, a great deal have tried, but they have not disturbed my tea, television watching or any other leisure pursuits. Known callers, however, get through without any difficulty whatsoever. Yup, I had to pay for the privilege. So what? A little under a hundred quid for peace and quiet. Worth every penny. So, to those who complain about such calls, buy a Truecall and solve your problems. Or is it that you just want someone else to do something on your behalf (such as yet more laws and bans)? Well, someone has done something and they are more than happy to sell it to you.

Now all I need is something similar for my mobile…

    AND computer.

Yes, yes! I know “spam filters” are meant to do that, but have you ever had one that actualy WORKS?

  2. There are such things for mobile I have one on my Sony android it blocks all unwanted calls and texts and is free with no adverts of course if you want call logs etc you have to pay for that, and for it to save all you data etc. But as I hardly use my mobile and it is mainly on call divert I really don’t need a paid service I just want to stop the irritating texts which this service does.
They are available for android Iphone and Blackberry depending on your preference.
The one I use is called simply call blocker an was freely available in the google app store.

    • I’ve got Phone Warrior installed on mine. It is better than nothing, but nothing like as effective as Truecall is on the land line. At best, these things divert to your answering service or hang up. Truecall allows a range of options depending on the type of call and you can filter it to only allow calls through that you want to receive.

The mobile phone filters are, like the computer spam filters, a partial solution.

One method I’ve found quite effective is to leave the phone disconnected.

  4. If you do get an unsolicited advertising call …
Be as abusive as you possibly can …
It seems to be gradually working – I’m getting a lot fewer, now than I used to!
