When I was younger, I was a socialist. I was a Labour party activist. Yup, I even knocked on doors. Then I grew up. Reality hit me like a plank of two-by-four. Socialism doesn’t work. It’s been tried and every time it has failed – sometimes leaving piles of bodies in its wake. Socialism relies on the use of force to make people comply with the will of the collective. Socialism has no place for the individual – without whom the collective cannot exist anyway. Socialism invariably means spending other people’s money and when you run out, you steal more. Socialism means poking about in people’s lives and ever more petty regulations. We have seen this. The evidence for it is irrefutable. Those who still cling to it are either ignorant or wilfully so if they refuse to acknowledge the evidence – or they are malign.
So, having got to his nineties and still believing in this vile dogma, what is Harry Smith?
What I gained from meeting Miliband is that I believe he can lead, that he does care, and that he will be engaged with the everyday concerns of everyday people as long as he remembers to rub shoulders with us as many times as possible.
Then, frankly, you are a credulous old fool. Miliband couldn’t run a whelk stall. He has no leadership skills, no grasp of economics and bugger all understanding of what motivates the ordinary individual. He wants to steal even more of our money and piss it up the wall on his vanity projects while bringing in even more repressive legislation. He is a malignant tumour – in other words, a professional politician. If you are impressed, then all I can say is that your ninety-odd years of experience have taught you nothing.
Be fair – some people are slow learners.
Pedestrian in this case.
More like utterly somnolent!
Some people at the age of 90 have 90 years experience of life. Others have one year’s experience repeated 90times and still have not learned the lessons. Too many people need to be reminded of what life was like under socialism in Britain. The link is fictional, but true to life under socialism.

From the look of the crinkly, elderly brotherhood who were filling the G-Mex this week I would suggest that “Harry” is not the only one who should be tested for dementia.
Now there’s a pig you will never tach to sing, my friend…
You’re spot on. The man is hopeless. Balls is even more hopeless. In fact I cannot think of one member of the shadow cabinet that is even remotely fit for purpose. Robin Cook, Denis Healey, even Tony Benn spouted politics that I totally disagreed with but at least they had something about them. This lot have nothing to offer at all.
Most of the voting people cannot fathom they have been bribed into Labour socialism or Conservative capitalism.
Now let’s be fair here, the conservatives are hardly peddling capitalism. More like socialism lite.
True. I guess my brain was thinking 1980s Thatcher social-capitalism at the time.
