Darwin at Work

Sometimes, I am left speechless by the sheer depth of human stupidity.

Emergency services are warning parents to be aware of what their children do online after a young boy suffered serious burns after setting himself on fire following an internet craze.

You what?

Oliver Sharp, an 11-year-old boy from north Lincolnshire, needed a skin graft on Tuesday after he was dared to set his T-shirt on fire. He put out the fire the first time, but the second time he became engulfed in flames.

I can recall as a child, my parents warning me about doing stupid things. They used to suggest that if someone told me to jump off a cliff, would I do it? well, of course not. Nowadays, it seems people do. Being 11 years old is no excuse. It’s old enough to know that setting oneself on fire is irredeemably stupid. But then, this is the generation that thought pouring a bucket of cold water over their heads was all okay because it was on teh interwebs. Fucking morons.

“Parents need to sit down with their youngster, whether they’re 8 or 18 and talk to them about being careful online, including on Instagram and Twitter, and warn them about getting drawn into any dares.”

Well, yes, blindingly obvious,I’d have thought. But blindingly obvious is not the case in our dumbed-down world populated with simpletons who set themselves on fire because some cretin on the Internet told  them to. Idiocracy is looking more and more like a documentary with every passing day.

The craze is thought to have started in America a year ago, where some of the ‘challenges’ ended in fatalities.

That Charles Darwin knew a thing or two…

    • The one thing the USA has *not* been good at is racial mixing. The UK — specifically, its most urban areas — has been rather better at it, with relatively little ghettoising. (Obviously, there are certain cultures who take exception at the very notion of mixing with others, but I won’t dignify it with any further publicity. Suffice to say that they’ll learn. The hard way, if necessary.)

Genetic mixing is a good thing; it’s sticking within your own tribe that lowers the quality of the overall gene pool. This is why pedigree dogs (and royal families) tend to have more illnesses and congenital diseases than hardier mongrels.

It’s not just genetics either: The more cultures and languages you are exposed to, the more ways of thinking and looking at reality you have available in your toolkit.

      • USA White:Black:Mixed:Asian:Native 72:13:9:5:1, far more mixed that the UK which is why they fly the flag everywhere and the president stuffs ‘American’ into every second sentence he utters.

Real engineering uses trials and prototypes; social ‘engineering’ just repeats the same mistakes over and over again in the hope that eventually it might work.
