Plus Ca Change

I’ve been largely ignoring project fear while I’ve been away. But, I see it hasn’t abated.

If Britons vote to leave the European Union  it could be the beginning of the end for the 28-nation bloc and for western political civilisation more generally, European Council President Donald Tusk has said.

Is this the shark-jumping moment – or did they do that already? Fucking hell, but these creatures are pretty desperate.

  1. Got your narratives mixed up. The idea that if the UK leaves, the EU could disintegrate has been peddled by brexiteers for months. It’s not going to happen. The anti EU “ten minutes hate” that has gripped the U.K. Is not typical of the rest of the EU, where anti EU hatred of the sort seen here is a minority sport. Indeed it was here as well until 2008 crash.

You can see the appeal of it for brexiteers. It is only through the collapse of the EU that they think they could get tariff free trading and the restrictions on immigration that they crave. The conservative wet dream is complete freedom of movement for capital and highly regulated movement for people. However it will remain a wet dream.

    • The anti EU “ten minutes hate” that has gripped the U.K. Is not typical of the rest of the EU,

Tell that to the German I was talking to during the senior race last Friday… 😉

    • Stephen,

It may shock you to learn, then, that here in Italy, there are plenty who would also like to see the EU torn down. And the Euro with it.

Unlike the Remain camp, who also seem to be continually conflating the European Union with Europe itself, most people are well aware that the EU is an entirely artificial political construct and, therefore, not necessary for anything other than giving has-been politicians a new trough to shove their snouts into while performing much-needed research and development on new forms of red tape.

Even if the EU were to fall apart like the poorly constructed house of cards that it is, it does not logically follow that it can never be replaced by *something else*. Preferably something better. (It’s hard to imagine how they could create something worse, but these are politicians we’re talking about. I’m sure they’ll surprise us.)

The League of Nations was replaced by the United Nations, for example. That was back in the 1950s. Why the assumption that the collapse of the EU and its institutions would lead to War, Famine, Pestilence, and Tony Blair galloping over the horizon?

  2. Is this the world’s shortest fisk?

“If Britons vote to leave the European Union it could be the beginning of the end for the 28-nation bloc…”

This would be a good thing.

“…and for western political civilisation more generally,…”

    Get real you idiot.

  3. I had no idea that the future of western political civilisation lies in our hands.

Makes me proud to be British.

  4. What? “Western Political Civilisation?” Not just “Western European Political Civilisation,” but all of it? America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, all the other western European countries? Wow! I knew that America was a bit miffed by the possibility of our leaving (well, Obama was, at least), but I never realised that their whole “political civilisation” hinged on it! No wonder Project Fear has been upping the ante lately!

We’re doomed! Doomed, I tell you!

  5. May be – just maybe the British want their country back.
Even more maybe then they will be free of hate laws and political police.

    • In that case we need to first brexit and then get rid of the UK’s self-serving establishment.

  6. From what I`ve been hearing a lot of folk in Europe are watching this very closely hoping that we do leave so as to pressure their govts into holding referenda on their own membership.
