I’m All For That

Lenny Henry wants Ofcom to impose diversity targets on the BBC.

Lenny Henry has urged Ofcom, the media regulator, to reconsider its “strangely passive decision” not to force the BBC to increase the diversity of its workforce.

Writing for the Guardian, the actor and comedian said the publication of the BBC’s annual report and list of top earners last month showed there was a “long way to go” in improving off-screen diversity at the corporation.

Well, yes, why not? Maybe we will see a few more middle-aged white men on-screen to balance things out a bit? As for off-screen, maybe people of different backgrounds have no interest in those jobs. Just a thought. What will they do? Drag them off the streets?

Or maybe not…

Meanwhile in my industry, I am being nagged to complete a diversity questionnaire because they want to increase diversity. I haven’t completed it and will not complete it. I have no interest in diversity as the only thing that matters is competence. Nothing else.

  1. Ah, diversity questionnaires. Funny thing. The ones I get always accidentally fall down behind filing cabinets, get misfiled or even end up in the bin, some even via the shredder. Weird or what?

If pressed, I usually point to the pile of work on the other end of my desk and remark “Which is more important – the job you pay me to do or this?” or “Yes, I will, but I have to do this first.” Either works.

  2. “the only thing that matters is competence. Nothing else.”
I can’t beleive you would say that in 2017. You bigot

  3. I demand that the BBC be required to hire disorderly, elderly, right wing bastard Canadians, often somewhat the worse for their belief (delusion?) that Portuguese reds are soft drinks.

    • When will diversity become affirmative action based.
Plus dominance given to breeding groups as “children are our future”

  4. “Henry said there was widespread agreement across the industry that more needed to be done, but added: “There is just one problem. Ofcom, the body which would be responsible for setting any targets for the broadcasters, doesn’t agree with me.”

I’ve never had much time for Ofcom. That changes now.
