Unlike DocBud of this parish, I rather like Wales. I spent three of my teenage years there and return from time to time – usually on a motorcycle. The ride up through the middle of the principality contains roads that are a mix of the fast and the twisty, so ideal for a bike.
This weekend we spent a few days in Llandudno and wandered around the area avoiding storm Brian, so spent the Saturday in Colwyn. Holyhead on a Sunday morning is much like Lodeve on a Monday – nothing is open for business. We sought out a small Roman fort and befriended a cat, then headed back to the mainland and more castles…
Take your bike to Sardinia, great roads, beautiful views and wonderful, welcoming people. There are some superb coastal roads in the south west of the island, Alghero is a magic ancient walled city and there are lots of archeological sites to visit. All this and sunshine, you can’t go wrong.
I’m sure it is. It’s on my list. Unfortunately Mrs L’s ongoing illness precludes such trips at the moment.
Been there and done that Doc. Fine Island. Nuragic tower ruins all over the place. Even went to Corsica on a day trip to Bonifacio. Most instantly memorable was the smell of the place. We arrived at lunchtime from Italy to France and the aroma of the cooking was so distinct… herbs and stews rather than pasta…
But I am Welsh, and my country is just beautiful, especially the beaches. We were at Porthcawl’s Rest Bay at the weekend. A quid for the car park (can’t say fairer than that) and a cafe serving Italian ice-cream. Kite surfers racing along the shoreline… and our old dog lapping up the waves bigtime. Bliss.
The A44 was always my favourite. On those rare days when it wasn’t raining.
