I Should Bloody Well Hope So

Romano Fenati has been sacked following his little escapade in San Marino.

Romano Fenati has been sacked by his Marinelli Snipers Team following a remarkable incident whereby he pulled Stefano Manzi’s brake lever at 140mph during Sunday’s Moto2 race in San Marino.

The Italian rider was given a two-race suspension but has now had his contract ripped up.

I should think so too. Motorcycle racing is inherently dangerous at the best of times. This kind of behaviour has no place on the track – indeed, no place anywhere. Not only has he been rightly sacked by his team, he should be subject to a lifetime ban from the sport.

Fenati himself apologised on Monday. “This morning, with a clear mind, I wish it had been just a bad dream,” he said. “I think back to those moments, I made a disgraceful gesture, I was not a man. The criticisms are correct and I understand the resentment towards me. I want to apologise to everyone who believed in me and all those who felt hurt by my actions.

Bit late for that. He is fortunate that Stefano Manzi was able to regain control and no harm was done. Manzi or another rider involved in a resulting pile-up could have been killed. Whatever happened to the spirit of Mike Hailwood?

British rider Cal Crutchlow, who finished third in Sunday’s MotoGP race at Misano, told reporters the 22-year-old should have been banned for life. “He should never compete on a motorcycle again,” said the LCR Honda rider. “You can’t do this to another motorcycle racer. We are risking our lives enough.”

I agree.

  1. At least man enough to apologise and to recognise that what he did was wrong a highly dangerous, but I agree, banning him for life is the right punishment

  2. It’s not as if this was an isolated incident – he has previous form; booting another rider’s bike during a race for one.

  3. Am I the only one who gets annoyed when sports organisations set up kangaroo courts for matters that are clearly above them.
This was attempted murder, was it not?

    • Exactly what I was going to say. If I did that to a biker on a public road I would expect to be hauled before the courts for attempted Murder. It’s not any different to ramming a biker with a car.

  4. Definitely a psycho. Needs to be kept as far away from racing as possible. Also see if it’s wise that he keep his driving license.
