The Voice of Truth

Jolyon Maugham

Sigh… This vile creature is still making mischief, I see and people fall for it.

Okay, so we have a minority government. This is perfectly legitimate under our system. In 2010, the Conservatives formed a coalition. That wasn’t possible in 2017. They are the largest party in the house, so have every right to form a government. To claim that they do not have a mandate to do so is to misunderstand (in Jolyon’s case, wilfully and mischievously) how our parliamentary system works.

As for the new leader being unelected, this is not true. They have been elected by the electorate in their constituency. Our parliamentary system allows for a change of leader mid-term. We elect parliaments, not prime ministers. We are not a republic, we do not elect presidents. I’m tired with having to point this out. I had to point it out when Gordon Brown was chosen as leader of the Labour party and took charge of the government a decade or so ago. Oh, wait… No, I didn’t, because people weren’t complaining then. Fuck me! It’s almost as if people have double standards or something…

As for the country not wanting to leave the EU, the last time I checked 51 was a bigger number than 48. Yes, sure, the difference is a slim one, but it was a perfectly legitimate outcome and the failure to enact that outcome has been a shameful stain on our democracy. That, frankly, should be of concern to us all. Brexit has almost become a sideshow here. We have a parliament that openly treats the electorate with contempt. And those who side with them likewise show contempt for the democratic process. We voted the wrong way because we believed lies, apparently. We do not have autonomy and cannot make up our own minds based upon the evidence. No, we were groomed by the lies of the Leave campaign. Therefore, our betters must set things right. Anyone who cannot see what is wrong here must be blind. Why, I wonder, are not the majority outraged by this blatant assault on democracy?

Jolyon is engaging in some pretty arrogant effrontery in claiming to speak for the country. Around half of the country most certainly does not want to stay – and if asked again, would say so again. We are a divided nation and to claim otherwise is wilful blindness. But, Jolyon Maugham. What should we expect? Truth and honesty? Will be a first from him.

I’ll leave it with this pithy response:

Baboom tish!

Edited to add: I notice silence from Jolyon on the matter of our new EU president that no one will have voted for. But that’s okay because reasons, I guess.

  1. And, of course, both Labour and Labour Lite went to the last general election promising to deliver Brexit, although certain candidates, such as the bitch Soubry, apparently had their fingers crossed behind their backs.

  2. I find the bizarre mental somersaults that these people are forced to do to maintain their worldview quite fascinating. Complaining about a democratic deficit while, at the same time, arguing for the UK to stay in the hopelessly undemocratic EU in direct opposition to the result of a national referendum. Surely you have to be mentally ill to be able to do it.

  3. It’s The Guardian… you should not set expectations so high. It was always lefty but in the last 5 years it has been swamped by moronic op columns like this.
