Well, Yeah…

Last March when covid was still a new thing, those of us who were paying attention pointed out that as this is an RNA virus, it will, like flu or the common cold, mutate.

Now, suddenly, it has mutated.

Britain could face even more super-infectious coronavirus variants because surging infections across the globe fuel the chances of the pathogen mutating to beat the immune system and vaccines, scientists say.

More than 90million Covid-19 cases have been recorded worldwide since the pandemic began, with numbers surging 33.8 per cent in the last two months alone.

And the spiralling cases will only trigger more mutations because it gives the virus more opportunity to evolve, infectious disease experts fear. Mutations could render vaccines useless, experts fear. Number 10’s top scientists believe the current crop of jabs will still work against any of the recently-spotted variants – but may be slightly less effective.

Well, duh! That’s what RNA viruses do. Why are we expected to be surprised by this? Of course, there are those who have believed the propaganda and will be suitably terrified. All of which serves to fuel my underlying misanthropy and general despair at the credulousness of the general public.

Evolutionary pressure will cause the new strains to reduce in virulence as it spreads. That is what happens. It’s normal. Nothing to see here. Some of us were saying this nearly a year ago.

However, the variant does not appear to be more deadly.

‘Even more speculative, but interesting, is we notice that the death rates are a lot lower even though cases are very high,’ Gagnon said.

This may suggest 20C-US is highly transmissible but only causes a mild illness.

Yup. As I say, nothing to see here, move along. This is precisely what these types of virus do.

The stupid, it hurts.

  1. I have been trying to recall how we all reacted to outbreaks of flu in the past – Vaccines weren’t readily available and even now, are based on the predicted virus from the previous year. We only found out who had ‘the flu’ when they started coughing and sneezing at work, or (in some cases) stayed home to prevent spreading it and to recover. There wasn’t mass testing available so I don’t remember ever hearing about the numbers who had the virus, but we were often concerned about the numbers who had serious symptoms that required medical treatment (causing the NHS to reach full capacity) most winters, some worse than others.
The current virus may be significantly more serious that previous flu epidemics, but it may be that the accurate number of infected individuals may be no worse than in previous epidemics and that the figures resulting from a poorly focussed and often poorly processed PCR mass screening are being used to create panic among the population. I may be over-optimistic inn thinking this, but I have no confidence in anything the government and its so-called experts have said or done.

  2. I thought that the government were taking advice from virologists, that is people who know a lot about viruses. Yet a virus mutating took them completely by surprise? Presumably all the competent virologists who said that trying to control a virus is futile were fired on day one. Leaving us with experts who didn’t even know that viruses mutate.

      • Screw turned at work today. Owner issued masks guidance which some of us take issue with. According to others, we’re selfish pricks. Factions are forming.

    • You should look at who’s on SAGE and their professions, connections, conflicts, vested interests

Virologists, Immunologists – maybe a few. Most are Social Science, Behaviourists, Psychologists, Modellers (eg always wrong Ferguson)…

      They are emphatically not Science

Also their remit is “stop Covid deaths” – nothing else matters
