Colour Me Surprised

Some things are of their time and are best left there.

The big money reboot of 1990s favourite Challenge Anneka is facing the axe after getting a kicking from viewers.

Sources claim Channel 5 has now ditched plans for a second series – nearly 30 years after the original BBC 1 show came to an end – following disastrous viewing figures.

The show, featuring Anneka Rice battling to complete community projects, proved so unpopular that the final two episodes have already been shunted out of their primetime slot on Saturday evenings.

Ouch that had to hurt. However, who thought it a good idea to drag this one out of retirement? I never bothered with it at the time, so wasn’t going to now. But even if it was popular once, it doesn’t follow that a new, younger audience will tune in. Indeed, the new, younger audience aren’t tuning in to anything, hence broadcast television is a dying medium. Which is why the concept of a television licence is dying on its feet. Youngsters who are more into streaming on their phones or tablets aren’t going to pay for a licence to watch broadcast television. Who does that anymore? As someone who grew up with broadcast TV and would tune in for my favourite programmes – prior to recording devices – I found that I haven’t watched it for ages, so much so that I eventually got rid of my TV licence. The TV itself, under a cover, unloved in a corner of a room I hardly use will go to the tip eventually.

  1. As I recall, part of the attraction of the show was that Anneka was often followed by the camera from behind and had a pretty fine behind. Is it really beyond the abilities of the current crop of TV people to find a capable presenter with a nice arse?

Of course we all know the reason why that comment is completely unacceptable and hence what the problem is.
