Queen’s Speech

Today is the State Opening of Parliament. The Queen’s Speech, likely to be the last before an election, outlines HMG’s planned round of legislation during the next parliament. Ho hum…

I think Charles Kennedy sums it up best when he talks of the government using a climate of fear. I’ve commented on this before, but it’s no bad thing to keep banging the drum. In the name of our protection, the government plans to legislate away the very basic freedoms we take for granted. The freedoms a previous generation fought and gave their lives for.

Since coming to power, this administration has introduced powers of detention that sidestep the usual burden of proof, the right to silence, the right of peaceful assembly and, indirectly, the ability of the police to keep forever DNA details of people who are arrested but subsequently not charged.

Yet to come, the national ID database………
