ID to Vote

Voters will be asked to produce photographic identification at polling stations under controversial proposals from the Electoral Commission to combat fraud.

Election fraud threat is ‘so great that photo ID is urgently needed’-News-Politics-TimesOnline.

Oh, for crying out loud!

I think there’s a very strong case for making sure we go down the road of tightening up the identification of polling station voting as well.

Evidence?

Update: This pithy comment from El Reg:

Younger’s statements are somewhat eccentric, even bizarre, given that ID cards could most readily be used to prove identity in the part of the ballot system where it’s least necessary – i.e. at the polling station, where there is no evidence of widespread fraud.

Quite.

  1. Oh come-on! Do you object to photo-ID for Bus and Rail passes and passports? I suppose you do – but you’d rather honest people pay for the dishonest than have to show a picture of yourself and ‘infringe your rights’. What a load of baloney! Photo ID for voting is long overdue.

  2. I will ask you the same question I posed in the original piece; where is the evidence of electoral fraud to support the “need”?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… choice. I choose not to have a photo rail pass (although I have chosen to have one in the past as it suited me) and I choose not to have a photo bus pass and I choose to hold a passport, although I am becoming increasingly irritated by the hoipolloi who presumptiously ask to see it. Mostly the response is curt and negative.

Frankly, there is no need for this as the system is working (if you call FPTP working). I don’t wish to be forced to carry photo ID and don’t plan to. If this comes in I will either switch to postal voting or not vote – frankly, withholding my vote from the shysters on offer is becoming increasingly attractive as I am already forced to choose the least worst option.

  3. An ID card is not going to improve voting fraud as the in person voting is not the area where fraud is happening, it is the postal voting system where the fraud is happening.
