Big Society Bribes

Maidenhead council is planning to bribe people into volunteering for the big society.

Now one local authority believes it has the answer: “big society reward points” redeemable in supermarkets, high street shops and restaurants in return for good deeds.

Windsor and Maidenhead council hopes to join forces with a commercial rewards scheme such as Nectar – whose points can be redeemed in Sainsbury’s, Homebase and Argos among others – or RecycleBank, whose vouchers can be spent in outlets including Marks & Spencer and McDonald’s.

Well, if the current Guardian poll is anything to go by, they are in for an unpleasant surprise. It’s currently running at 84% against.

Ho hum…

  1. I do up to 12 hours a week as a volunteer, and the only incentive required is the odd ‘thank you’ or ‘well done’. Although the yearly invitations to various ‘volunteer appreciation’ soirées are quite pleasant.

As for a ‘points’ scheme; you might as well pay volunteers, at which point they become employees.
