Uncool, eh? Well, That’s Too Bad

Apparently, I’m uncool. I am over 35 and yes, I do own a copy of Brothers in Arms. Indeed, I have a copy of all of Dire Straits’ output and have collected Knopflers’ albums since then –  including the Notting Hillbillies.

I’ve always liked his music and make no bones about it. I refuse to be browbeaten by what others consider cool or uncool –  that’s just damned silly. My musical tastes are determined by what takes my fancy, not what others think. So I’ll happily listen to 80s pop, country, soul, blues, heavy metal, Steinman’s gloriously over the top rock opera or feel my spine tingle to Mozart’s requiem or a Gregorian chant. What I won’t listen to is rap. I never could stand it.

  1. I am under 35, and I own all of Dire Straits’ output; Brothers In Arms remains an excellent album (and the title track is utterly brilliant), but as albums I prefer Communiqué and Making Movies.

I haven’t kept up with Knopler’s solo stuff so much, though I do own Sailing To Philadelphia (What It Is remains a stone-cold classic).

I hadn’t realised he co-wrote Blind Willie MacTell—one of the very few Dylan tracks that I really like.

  2. I’m not too familiar with your ‘modern stuff’ -I’ve heard of Dire Straits but not Brother’s in Arms!
Pat Nurse reminded me of my era with an early Dylan track on Tea and Cigarettes!

  3. Brothers In Arms I think was the first album I bought, though my favourite is Love Over Gold which my dad gave me on vinyl and I’ve since had on just about every format bar minidisc at one time or another. And yes, it’s mostly for Telegraph Road.

  4. Not a huge fan of Knopfler’s solo stuff, but got most of Dire Straits output. ‘Making Movies’ is probably my favourite, but here’s an honourable mention for ExtendedancEPlay. Short, but oh so sweet.

As for being cool, it matters not a jot. However, check out this and the line I thought I’d never see at 0.28 (and yes, it is the UK Guardian…).

Heck, next the NME will issue an apology for calling them fascists.

  5. Also a big fan of Love Over Gold – listened to it often as a student.

I really must get round to stealing it from the internet sometime. Yawn.
