In Defence of Mary Beard

First it was that twat AA Gill, now it seems Samantha Brick is putting the boot into Mary Beard.

She has now waded into further controversy after telling Mary Beard, of BBC2’s Meet the Romans, she was “too ugly for TV.”

In a piece entitled “Sorry, some woman ARE too ugly for TV”, she said: “The greatest tragedy isn’t Ms Beard’s wild hair, ungainly posture or make-up free face: it’s the fact that the BBC didn’t offer her guidance on her appearance in the first place.”

I’ve been watching Beard’s series on the Romans and have enjoyed it so far. She is an entertaining presenter who clearly relishes her subject. That, frankly, is more important than how she looks. So, Ms Brick and Mr Gill can go hang. I know who I would rather watch…

  1. If I were Mary Beard’s age (and if she was available), I would love to date her. She’s not even ugly – more like ‘the girl next door’ in an erm…mature kind of way.

The only use I’d find for someone like Samantha Brick might be as a draught excluder. If she could pass the requisite IQ test, that is…

  2. I’ve seen Mary Beard lecture and she’s a national treasure: an academic who can convey complex ideas with clarity and enthusiasm and with never a note of patronising her audience, even when they are callow undergraduates. In the context of that, she could be bald and toothless and still be who she is. As it is, she is a glorious, old-fashioned heedless Cambridge academic who barely notices what she’s wearing as long as she’s not cold.

Ms (Mrs?) Brick appears to have become a new type of media creature – a Public Mass Media Troll. I wonder if she will live to deeply regret that career choice.

  3. Samantha Brick, I found a photo of her, no figure worth talking of and mediocre face and hair, obviously a person with a fragile ego and no hope of ever maturing beyond shallow.

  4. Who would I most like to be when I grow up – clever and enthusiastic like Mary or would I prefer to look like Gill or Ms Brick.

Hmmm…let me see, who looks like they are having the most fun and is the more highly-regarded by students, colleagues and the public?

    • Sadly most of the current crop of Year 10 girls wouldn’t share your opinion – if their reaction to female teachers who don’t wear make-up is anything to go by – and neither would their orange-hued, bedizened mothers.

Longrider is right in making a stand against this idiocy; it’s a worryingly short step from ‘too ugly for TV’ to ‘too clever for TV’, at which point there would be no more hope for us as a society.

  5. XX Samantha Brick XX

The most sexist bastard around since Chubby Brown?

  6. Is this the stupid vapid bint who wrote an article saying women hated her because she was so beautiful?
