Junk Science of the Day

We’re all going to dieeeee!!!!

Having regular sugary drinks may increase the chance of developing type 2 diabetes, even for slim people, researchers say.

And they suggest that cutting down on sugar-sweetened beverages could make a dent in the number of people developing diabetes in the UK.

Oh, fuck off already. Yet more bollocks being pushed by the new puritans of public health.

The study appears in the British Medical Journal.

Oh, well, it must be true, then.

Here’s the clincher (my emphasis).

And the pattern they found hints that drinks with added sugar could be linked to an increased risk of diabetes, regardless of weight.

So, they haven’t actually discovered a causation at all. So, er drinking sweet drinks isn’t proved to be harmful at all. The usual cockwaffle, then.

Dr Fumiaki Imamura, a lead researcher, told the BBC: “Our study suggests that if everyone reduces soft sugary drinks, everyone gets the benefit.”

It does nothing of the sort. It is junk science being used to push a puritanical authoritarian agenda, so you can take your study and stick it where the sun don’t shine. I’ll carry on as normal and drink as many sweet drinks as I see fit.

  1. In a similar vein, I read recently that if everyone stops travelling by any form of transport the number of motoring, flying, or sailing deaths will decrease significantly. Possibly written by the same team who produced the BMJ article.

  2. Oh no! here we go again! “May”, “Hints”, “Suggests”, “Could be”. The road to ruin or again, ‘premature’ death. Definite ban on its way. It worked well last time

Well, they have to justify scrounging off the taxpayer somehow. Mind you, I can’t blame these prats for doing it. When the 650 bums on the green benches seem so willing to swallow it and keep doling out the money, I’d probably do the same.

  3. I’ve always eaten and drunk exactly what I’ve liked and I’m in perfect health. Which of my three heads should I shake in despair?

  4. Trouble is, sugar=evil is the order of the day and everything has to be twisted to fit. This is a matter of morality rather than common sense.

It can’t be coincidence that there has been a great deal of media coverage recently of links between slavery and the origins of the West Indian sugar trade – I’ve just watched a documentary presenter describe how disturbing he finds the spectacle of sugar cane being harvested by hand today.
