So It’s Eostre, Then…

The C of E is getting its knickers in a twist.

The Church of England has accused Cadbury and the National Trust of “airbrushing faith” by omitting references to Easter from egg hunts.

The Archbishop of York said calling the event the Cadbury Egg Hunt was like “spitting on the grave” of the firm’s Christian founder, John Cadbury.

The chocolate maker denied the claims saying it clearly used the word Easter on its packaging and in its marketing.

The National Trust also denied it was downplaying the significance of Easter.

Sigh… Easter is not a Christian festival. It is a pagan one; a celebration of spring and fertility – hence the egg reference. The Christians merely overlaid their bunch of myths and legends onto the older ones that pre-existed it on these islands. Get over yourselves already. Besides, when it comes to offence-taking, the C of E is an amateur. You need the dhimmi leftist progressive to really do offence taking properly.

  1. A fake news story from the Torygraph (remember when it used to be serious newspaper?) designed to provoke howls of outrage from the usual suspects. Both Cadbury and the NT mention Easter on the pages relating to the event.

As for spitting on the grave of John Cadbury, it would seem that the good Archbishop has conveniently forgotten that the Church were behind almost 30 years of state sponsored persecution of Quakers back in the day.

    • The DT has indeed fallen a long way. Before I left UK 15 years ago, I used to get the dead tree version every day (partly for the cryptic crossword, but also because it was, as you say, a serious newspaper). The current online version, or that part of it not behind a paywall, seems to be trying to compete with the tabloids.

      • You left the UK 15 years ago, so did we. I don’t remember seeing you, but you probably looked younger back then.

  2. The Cadburys? As Clarissa points out, they were Quakers, not CofE. Besides, aren’t Easter Egg hunts a German Protestant import? Hardly pagan.

  3. Well I just posted a succinct reply to Bucko’s comment, and it went straight into moderation again. It’s only the past couple of days it’s done this. Would it perhaps be that for the last 6 weeks I was posting from an IP in Thailand, and this week I’m posting from Greece again?

I don’t pretend to know how these things work, but I know Hotmail refused to let me access my email from my mobile while I was away, telling me that it suspected I was unauthorised, despite knowing the password. So it was “computer says NO”. Which was a pain. But oddly, it let me in when I used our laptop which we had with us.

  4. There is so much wrong with Sentamu’s silly assertions that it’s hard to know where to start. First there is the stupid. idea that the default position of someone organising egg hunts for kids is always going to be that it is about him and his Church. Then there is the disingenuous claiming Cadbury as a Christian while failing to mention that he was a Quaker and a non conformist. At the time the CofE was very keen to make sure such people were treated as second class citizens. As you mentioned, the word Easter has pagan origins that have nothing to do with Christianity. I have to wonder if he is even aware of how much of a fool he has made of himself. The spoof news sites have been having a lot of fun with him.
