He’s Right

Russell Howard on race.

Russell Howard has been criticised for claiming white people in the UK should not take advice from ethnic minorities on how to speak about race.

Speaking during his Sky One show, the Russell Howard Hour, the comedian said a guide produced to advise people on how to avoid offending black and Asian colleagues was “insane”.

There was no need for the advice, he suggested.

Naturally the usual suspects are out complaining. However, he is correct. We don’t need this advice. I am always polite and courteous to everyone that I meet and treat others as I would wish to be treated. I will not tread on eggshells just because someone has an increased level of melanin in their epidermis.

As Howard comments; the questions are, indeed, insane. They are also deeply patronising. So, yeah, we don’t need it because we are not infants. Nor are we institutionally racist.

  1. Obviously, we need more of these books. How to talk to redheads (don’t ask if the carpet matches the curtains?), how to talk to people with huge warts on the end of their nose, how to talk to the very tall (don’t ask them what’s the oxygen is like up there?), how to talk to a Scotsman in a kilt, the list is endless.

  2. Maybe we need a guide for black and Asian colleagues on not being so bloody touchy and oversensitive about things people say. I’m bald, have a big nose and have type 2 diabetes so there are some things that I could take offence about if I was so inclined. There is a perception, stoked by the MSM generally and the BBC in particular, that you have to be fat, sedentary and have a poor diet to get type 2 diabetes. I could get all offended when someone suggests this I suppose. I find it more effective to calmly explain that this more often isn’t the case.
