Silence…

A friend mentioned that there was a protest in London today in support of free speech. She meant this. Try as I might, I cannot find anything on the BBC website. Nor, for that matter the Guardian, so we are left with the Standard.

‘Day for Freedom’ protest in London: Milo Yiannopoulos and Tommy Robinson to speak at controversial far-right rally

When did freedom of speech and personal liberty become dirty words? When did normal expectations of being able to voice an opinion become “far right”?

Sargon of Akkad – real name Carl Benjamin – is known for his criticism of feminism, Islam, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the notion of “straight white male privilege”.

This, apparently, is “controversial”. We really are going to Hell in a handbasket.

The Anti-Fascist Student Network (AFSN) urged opponents to join the planned counter-demonstration, writing: “On Sunday, thousands of far-right anti-Muslim bigots will be marching through central London, anti-fascists from across the country need to take to the streets to oppose them

There. Corrected that for you.

I see it has finally made the Groan.

Thousands of far-right protesters march in London in support of ‘free speech’

Note the scary quote marks around free speech. There is nothing far right about civil liberties of which free speech is one.

On the other side of the lines, Freddi Hyde-Thompson, 28, from London, was shocked to find the counter-protesters outnumbered. “It’s really worrying ,” he said. “This cannot come to London and there be more of them than there are of us.”

Well, yes, there probably are – the silent majority who are tired of pandering to Islam, being told that they are privileged because they are white, who are weary of constantly being accused of being racist, homophobic or whatever, merely because they express an opinion out of step with the orthodoxy. If the nasty little counter protest was outnumbered, this is a good thing.

Hyde-Thompson saw the protesters’ claims of support for free speech as a contradiction. “If their freedom of speech is going to rub out other people’s freedom of speech then they’ve got no point. If they want to ban certain religions, that speaks for itself.”

The lack of self-awareness is frightening.

Among those watching the speakers and videos was Fatima, a black Muslim woman who would not give her full name.

“I’m here for freedom of speech,” she said, adding that she did not feel threatened. “It’s okay, I’m in my element; I don’t really care, this is England. There’s a guy with an infidels shirt right in front or me, I don’t know how he would react to me. This is a bit awkward for all of us.”

Perhaps this is because this demo didn’t involve the usual rent-a-mob from the anti-fascist movement, so was peaceful? What Fatima is seeing here is freedom of speech in action.

  1. Controversial: defn any words, ideas or actions the Left SJW MSM mob dislike.
Exmpl. “free speech” – only Approved Speech permited. Orign. Communist Russia; now adopted by EUSSR*

#DayForFreedom: ‘I’m Taking Twitter to Court to Prove Facts Are Now Treated as Hate’

Tommy Robinson has told the #DayForFreedom free speech rally in London that he’s taking Twitter to court, to prove the social media giant is treating “facts” as “hate” at the behest of a censorious British government

“The people of this country have been silenced for twenty to thirty years with the tag of ‘racist’,” he said.

“They have managed to silence people so they’re too scared to speak up when they see things that are wrong.

“They’re too scared to tell the truth and identify problems with an ideology and a religion in our country, because they’re worried about being called ‘racist’.

“[The establishment] now realise that tag is dead. No-one cares anymore about being labelled as a ‘racist’.

“So they’ve now introduced their new term: ‘hate speech’. What is ‘hate speech’?”

Anyone found his and others’ speeches live? Not pic of speaker + audio.

Only one I’ve found is: Count Dankula’s Speech At Day For Freedom

Jordan Peterson and Anti-Communist Groups ridicule EU Boss Jean-Claude Juncker for Marx Statue

Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission marked the 200th anniversary of the Communist Manifesto author’s birth by opening a series of exhibitions honouring his memory in Trier, and claimed he was not responsible for the actions of his bloodsoaked acolytes — figures including Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro, and the Kim dynasty.

  2. There were live streams on You Tube. The turn out was tremendous and opposition invisible (on the stream I watched, at any rate). Apparently there are more protests planned. Speakers included Gerrard Batten and Anne Marie Waters.
I think that the last straw has been the recent publicity given to resources being used to police internet ‘hate crime’ whilst we have grooming gangs throughout the UK and crime in London soaring.
It’s no longer a case of mere name-calling, people are losing their livelihoods and acquiring criminal convictions for ‘WrongThink’.
It would seem that the time is now right to get out from behind our keyboards to protest.
Of course there’s nothing about yesterday on the Beeb – there was no Antifa-instigated trouble which could be blamed on the ‘far right’.

  3. @Jay “Of course there’s nothing about yesterday on the Beeb”

There won’t be. It’s a very uncomfortable truth for them. If however there had been a march to mark Marx’s 200th birthday, then L Beeb would have been all over it like a bad rash. Of that you can be sure.

What I really, really hate is the double standards of the left

  4. I’m amused by the dilemma being faced by the BBC. They could report the event honestly. They could report it and try to put the far right spin on it but they risk getting an enormous kick back if they do that. So they are pretending it didn’t even happen. Well they got away with it with Climate-gate and the Ship of Fools incident. Nice to see that they are honoring their charter and reporting the news in an unbiased way.
