Shame About Those Buggy Whips

Buggy whip manufacturer engages in shroud waving.

But this week’s firing by the New York Daily News of half the paper’s staff shines a different light on the matter. The reason given by the publisher – a sharp decline in revenue – is largely the result of Google abusing its monopoly over online advertising, in tandem with Facebook. Vestager’s move against Android does nothing to protect the free press in Europe or America. This means it’s time for other regulators and legislators in America and in Europe to speed the process of bringing Google to heel.

Riiiight. So people are no longer paying to read your drivel and you want legislation to stop the competition? That’s about right, isn’t it?

The citizens of the world’s democracies face a choice. We can allow Google and Facebook to continue to strangle half our free press to death, and turn the rest into cowed pets. Or we can demand that our governments act now to protect the journalists who protect our most fundamental liberties.

But journalists do no such thing. They are lying arseholes who, for the most part, peddle the left’s orthodoxy. I would not put one penny piece in their pockets. Not that I use Facebook or Google either, but that’s another matter. If the legacy press cannot compete in this new world, they will die. Too bad. Bugger all to do with democracy.

  1. I use an ad blocker so Google and Facebook can whistle and some online publications detect it and as me to switch it off. No. I will just not read their drivel.

  2. Those wonderful dedicated investigative journalists who’s job it is to hold those politicians to account when they use an imaginary crisis to part us from our cash? Their failure to dig up the facts about man made climate change and so expose the greatest con in human history will be their epitaph. Instead, all of the digging was done by bloggers who put in hours of dedicated work for nothing. These were the people who were dedicated to the search for truth. Meanwhile the newspapers are still lazily parroting the usual nonsense about record heat and the relentless increase in natural disasters. Nonsense which nowadays can be easily debunked with just a few seconds of actual research. Shame on them, unemployment is exactly what they deserve.
