Oh, Goody!

There’s a vaccine.

Whizzing off the production line in thousands of tiny bottles – new footage shows the vaccine that could end the Covid misery engulfing the planet.

Oh, my, how are the foolish taken in. Okay, firstly, there is no way this has been through rigorous trials at this stage, so the optimism is a bit premature to say the least. Secondly, this is a vaccine for a corona virus. An RNA virus that mutates faster than a vaccine can be manufactured.

They are being stockpiled ready to be rolled out worldwide if clinical trials are a success, and regulators deem it safe and effective.

So, assuming that it is perfectly safe…

Given the unseemly rush to produce it, I’m not happy about that aspect as clinical trials take time and there will be pressure to get this onto the market.

Pfizer, which is working with Germany’s BioNTech, is currently running a trial on 44,000 people, and last week said it plans to apply for emergency US approval of its vaccine in November.

Yup, they plan to rush.

So, assuming that it is perfectly safe… it will have much the same efficacy as the seasonal flu vaccine, which isn’t much.

The idea that it could end the misery engulfing the planet is pure fantasy. Utter bollocks. We might just as well go down to the local witch doctor and buy a magic charm for warding off evil spirits. It’ll be just as effective and you can hang it on the wall.

  1. As I see it, the main danger from Covid 19 has largely passed. Yes people are still dying from it, about 150 per day at present, but how does that compare with how many people die from flu viruses every year. So the vaccine doesn’t have to work, it only needs to be perceived to work for the world to be able to return to something like normality. It will give the government a way to scrap all their pointless and irrational rules without losing face.

Something that made me laugh, and unfortunately I can’t now remember where I saw it, a picture of a shop display with different designs of face masks that had a mirror so that people could try them on.

    • There is that, I guess. In other news, Boris is thinking about resigning in the spring. Can’t say that I’m surprised. He’s had a baptism of fire and come up wanting.

  2. Hip, hip hooray. Oh, but Gov’ts now sayiing even with a vaccine we can not return to normal

Alternatively we could all take HCQ (OTC not POM) voluntarily as billions across world have done for ~50 years, but Gov’ts will not allow us to. Australia have made it illegal for a doctor to even suggest taking it

Powerful voices now argue for a more nuanced and less painful way of learning to live with the virus… We urge the PM to listen

“The measures now being imposed on large parts of the country would be severe and hard to bear if we had reason to believe that they would do any good. The trouble is that we have no shred of solid evidence that they will help at all.

The vast illogical web of new rules, increasingly impossible to understand or follow, looks worryingly like an exasperated attempt to punish us for wanting to live normal lives and enjoy ourselves.

Go to a pub if you are prepared to eat a large unhealthy meal with your drink, but not otherwise. Go to the gym in Manchester but not in Liverpool. Wear a mask while you walk to your restaurant table, but not while you sit down.

It would take the late Professor Albert Einstein to work out the latest combination of regulations on who we can or cannot see, mix with or meet, in the open air or indoors. And by the time the great physicist had managed to discover what it all meant, the rules would have changed again.

The alleged scientific basis for this is weak beyond belief, as Sir Keir Starmer pointed out before throwing all reason and logic aside and demanding still more stringent collective punishments

The practical effects of these measures on Covid are sketchy at best.

Their effects on human happiness, health, wellbeing and the economy are increasingly evident, deep, painful and lasting

Powerful voices argue for a more nuanced and less painful way of learning to live with the virus, as we rebuild our prosperity and our freedom and look forward to a future free of lockdowns, circuit-breakers and family separation.

Boris Johnson has the capacity to see this and act on it. We urge him, with all our hearts, to do so now.

Britons like the late Peter King are being sentenced to slow, agonising deaths … by No 10’s panic squad

“One of the filthiest tactics of the Panic Merchants is to claim that anyone who opposes their strangling of the country is callous and cares only about money, not life.

Dissenters have been pelted with slime of this kind by Johnson, the man who ruined Britain, and by his dense sidekick, Hancock – perhaps the first Health Secretary in history who does not know that malaria is spread by mosquitoes. They tell us we wish to ‘let the virus rip’.

Well, Johnson and Hancock, if you care so much about lives, get in touch with Lisa King, as I did. Ask her to tell you about how her husband Peter, a retired taxi driver aged 62, died

It is a horrible, upsetting story, involving a grown man screaming in agony. And in my view it is an absolutely direct consequence of Hancock’s conversion of the NHS into a National Covid Service which treats everything else as a nuisance.

This is not just some isolated case. Something like 25 million appointments with GPs have been lost as a result of the Johnson Government’s panic (not as a result of Covid, as the hopelessly pro-Government BBC always says. The Government had a choice over how to respond, and took the wrong path).

Millions have not had referrals for diagnoses including cancer and heart disease. Some of them will have been scythed down as Peter King was. Others will have been needlessly damaged in smaller, slower ways.

But this is what Johnson and Hancock have let rip – needless pain, needless death. Let them never again dare to pretend that their original bungle, and the later months in which they have tried to save themselves from deserved disgrace, were the only way to save lives…”

“Sir Keir shows his true colours: deepest red
The supposedly moderate Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has at last revealed himself as the fanatic he really is, with his wild calls for even more mass destruction of the jobs and livelihoods of Labour voters in a so-called ‘circuit-breaker’.

I am not surprised. Most people who report on politics in this country do not understand the subject, lacking the Marxist training which I had in my distant youth. They call Sir Keir ‘moderate’ because he is not Jeremy Corbyn. A fat lot they know.

In an interview with the New Statesman, he recently said: ‘I don’t think there are big issues on which I’ve changed my mind… The big issue we were grappling with then was how the Labour Party, or the Left generally, bound together the wider movement and its strands of equality – feminist politics, green politics, LGBT – which I thought was incredibly exciting, incredibly important. Broadly speaking, I think the Labour Party has done that very successfully.’ ”

  3. Millions of doses being manufactured in the hope it passes tests…what could go wrong?
Annyone read Peter May’s novel “Lockdown”?
As an early attempt, rejectred for publication, and only resurrected now he is famous and the topic is relevant, the story telling has some deficiencies. But the plot line is spot on.

What would you do, if you have bankrupted your BigPharma business stockpiling a vaccine that turned out not to be needed after all…

    • @TtC
Gov’t (taxpayers) have already bulk purchased tens of millions before testing & approval. Big Pharma and Valance raking in profits

      • And have sensibly demanded and been granted immunity from prosecution or civil lawsuits if there are adverse reactions.

Heads they win, tails you lose …
