Scary

A new mutation.

Another Covid variant that could dodge vaccine-triggered immunity has been identified in the UK, scientists say.

The strain — called B.1.525 — has been spotted 33 times already but experts say this could be an underestimate. It carries the E484K mutation found on both the South African and Brazilian variants, which make the current crop of jabs slightly less effective.

Facepalm.

It’s an RNA virus. RNA viruses mutate. It’s what they do because they don’t have that second strand in the helix controlling the rate of mutation. This is basic biology. It is why the flu jab is of variable efficacy – because there are so many strains. This is the same.

Yet project fear makes the mundane become a headline. The gullible read these headlines and forget that the flu jab is always one step behind, that thousands of people die every year through a combination of flu and pneumonia and that this year while being on the high side isn’t doing anything out of the ordinary and vaccines will be of variable use.

I despair, really I do.

  1. Amazing how these terrible new variants manage to crop up just before we’re supposedly going to be talking about relaxing restrictions…

    • Hammer, meet nail. Also amazing is the number of behavioral psychologists in Sage. Following this ‘news’ on the new mutation, you can bet next week’s wages that Ferguson pops up out of the woodwork again with a new scary model.

  2. How did Covid19 come up with a nice name but all the others read like really strong passwords?
Who makes them up? The names, I mean.
